Digital Archivist Shelly Black shared insights on creating a secure virtual reading room for remote researchers using desktop virtualization in her presentation “Deploying a Secure Virtual Reading Room” as part of World Digital Preservation Day on Nov. 2.

The event, held annually on the first Thursday of November, celebrates best practices in archiving and storing digitized and born-digital content. Penn State University Libraries hosted several virtual and University Park in-person events.

Black’s presentation built upon a March 2023 workshop that Brian Dietz co-presented at the BitCurator Users Forum, which led to a September 2023 presentation by Black, Dietz and colleagues from Duke University at the International Conference on Digital Preservation (iPRES) and the NDSA’s Digital Preservation (DigiPres) conference in November.
