The Libraries celebrates APISAA Heritage Month with three fascinating events

The Libraries joins with campus partners in celebration of Asian Pacific Islander South Asian American (APISAA) Heritage Month, March 15 to April 15. Nationally, Asian American Heritage Week is celebrated on the first full week of May. At NC State, APISAA Heritage Month is observed earlier to ensure that it takes place before the end of the academic school year.

The Libraries’ 2023 APISAA Heritage Month events are as follows:

Immersive Asian and Asian American Historical Timeline exhibit opening
Thursday, March 23, 12:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m., Hill Library Visualization Studio
This immersive exhibit uses an image-rich timeline to highlight the stories and accomplishments of Asian and Asian Americans on campus as well as their contributions to the university that are often unknown or invisible to the greater campus community. You can
view the Historical State timeline, developed by Victor Betts, Student Success Librarian for Special Collections, online along with timelines of other university-related topics. After the opening event, the timeline exhibit will be open every Monday and Thursday from 12:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m. through Thursday, April 13.

Unboxing Special Collections: Asian and Asian American Lives in the Archives
Friday, March 24, 1:00 p.m.-2:00 p.m., online
Livestreamed on the
Libraries YouTube channel, collections documenting Asian and Asian American lives from the university archives. Victor Betts, Student Success Librarian for Special Collections, and Dr. Kyung Hee Ha, Assistant Professor in the Department of Foreign Languages & Literatures, uncover often-unknown stories of Asian and Asian Americans on campus. Betts and Dr. Ha also talk about the importance of building a more complete historical record with the stories of historically excluded and underrepresented communities.

Rising Against Asian Hate: One Day in March: Film screening and discussion
Tuesday, March 28, 6:30 p.m.-8:00 p.m., Hill Library Auditorium
Set against the rise of anti-Asian rhetoric and violence throughout the pandemic and the mass killing of six women of Asian descent in the Atlanta area, this documentary pays tribute to the lives lost, examines the rise of anti-Asian racism, and documents a growing movement to fight back and stop the hate. Directed by Titi Yu and narrated by Emmy-nominated actress Sandra Oh. Watch the trailer
