Shark Week at the Libraries!

If you live every week like it’s Shark Week, then head to the Libraries the last week of September. We’re hosting three events that celebrate and educate about one of the most ancient and misunderstood creatures on earth.

First, on Wednesday, Sept. 21, from 4:30 p.m.-5:30 p.m. in the Hill Library’s Fishbowl Forum, author David Shiffman sits down to talk about his new book, Why Sharks Matter, and to discuss why it's crucial that we overcome our cinematic misconceptions about sharks and embrace them as the imperiled and elegant ocean guardians they really are.

Copies of Dr. Shiffman's book will be available for sale, and he will be joined by NC State instructor and undergraduate research mentor Dr. Carol Price to talk about student shark research. Students Ben Regester (Marine Science and Environmental Education) and Ben Rinehart (Marine Science) of the Spot A Shark program will host the discussion, which is co-sponsored by the NC State Marine Science Club.

Then, climb into the shark tank Monday, Sept. 19 through Friday, Sept. 23 in the Hill Library’s Visualization Studio for an immersive, 360-degree video experience! Go underwater to swim close-up with the beautiful, endangered, and incredibly toothy sand tiger shark, featuring work led by Dr. Price with Spot a Shark, and brought to hair-raising life by the Libraries’ Trevor Thornton. Drop in from 12:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m. each day this week and check it out.

Finally, the A/V Geeks are getting into the act with a screening and discussion of vintage educational films exploring the underwater world of sharks. Thursday, Sept. 29 from 4:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m. in the Hill Library’s Fishbowl Forum, A/V Geeks founder and NC State alumnus Skip Elsheimer joins Michelle Jewell, lecturer in Applied Ecology, for a fun and informative event.
