Description

Index to archival finding aids derived from major archival libraries and sources in the United States and the United Kingdom. Provides centralized access for searching and retrieval of archival finding aids that have been marked up using the emerging standard for Encoded Archival Description (EAD). Contains over 500,000 records (largely summary descriptions) of archives, manuscripts, and special collections and more than 5,000 collection guides (detailed lists describing the content of collections, often referred to as finding aids or inventories). The records duplicate those for archives and manuscripts found in RLG's Union catalog. Thousands of libraries, museums, and archives have contributed nearly a million collection descriptions to ArchiveGrid. Researchers searching ArchiveGrid can learn about the many items in each of these collections, contact archives to arrange a visit to examine materials, and order copies.
