NC State University Libraries Supports Open Access Publishing in Water Research Journals

IWA Publishing and Knowledge Unlatched

The NC State University Libraries commits to the recently announced subscribe-to-open pilot between Knowledge Unlatched, an online platform that supports free access to scholarly publications, and the International Water Association Press (IWAP), a leading journal dedicated to improving global health through publication of water research.

In this initiative, IWAP hopes to make ten of its subscription journals open access, including its flagship journal Water, Science and Technology, with no article processing charges to authors beginning in 2021. IWAP’s shift to a subscribe-to-open model will represent one of the largest flips of a journal publishing portfolio thus far. In the subscribe-to-open model, instead of charging authors article processing charges, subscription renewals provide the funding for converting journals to open access, making publications free for readers and authors worldwide.

"We are confident that flipping our portfolio of journals to Open Access will shift the way in which our content is used and will have a beneficial impact on research which helps provide people in all nations with clean drinking water and good sanitation,” says IWA Publishing’s Managing Director Rod Cookson.

The NC State University Libraries has committed its support of IWAP’s subscribe-to-open pilot by renewing its subscriptions to four journals included in the initiative: Journal of Water Sanitation and Hygiene for Development, Water, Science and Technology, Journal of Water and Health, and Water, Science and Technology- Water Supply.

These journals have historically included publications by NC State University researchers from Biological and Agricultural Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering, and Soil Science.
