Apply by March 15 for the Libraries’ Open Pedagogy Incubator

It’s one thing to plant the seeds for open education resources (OERs); it’s another thing to fully grow their implementation.

Continuing its leadership in open education, the Libraries will launch an Open Pedagogy Incubator this fall. Modeled on our successful Alt-Textbook program and the 2019 pilot of our OPEN Incubator, the incubator will incentivize faculty to go beyond the simple creation of open course materials to a full implementation of multiple Open Pedagogy approaches such as student-created content in their courses.

Through a series of workshops in fall 2020, the incubator will develop a cohort of six NC State faculty who are making important contributions to open and digital instruction, regardless of what size or type of course they teach. That cohort will help recruit more faculty to participate in another incubator in spring 2021.

The Open Pedagogy Incubator is a response to the Libraries’ findings that, while NC State faculty members were aware of the power of OERs, they were hesitant to try them out because of concerns about quality and availability.

Recognized as a leader in open education, the Libraries has also saved NC State students over a half-million dollars through its Alt-Textbook Program, which incentivizes OER adoption through faculty grants and collaborations. The Libraries has also partnered with Distance Education and Learning Technology Applications (DELTA) and Wolfpack Outfitters (the campus bookstore) to award Open Textbook Grants to faculty; created the Open Textbook Toolkit to provide simple, flexible, scalable components for OER adoptions; and partnered with NC LIVE on the Open Education North Carolina (OENC) initiative to offer a comprehensive suite of OER services and resources to educators across the entire state.
