James B. Harr, III, from the Communication, Rhetoric, and Digital Media Ph.D. program, will describe using network visualizations to explore communication networks across history. He will also introduce The Petition Project, an interactive, web-based visual representation of medieval communication networks using petitionary texts written during the reign of Edward I (1272-1307).
This session will discuss the application of network analysis on these 12th/13th-century documents with an approach focusing on a praxis that balances agency among human and non-human actors and establishes a model that is transferable to other historical datasets.
