Sonification is an emerging area of informatics wherein datasets are made available to visually impaired researchers. As a field, it is gaining traction for a number of reasons, including accessibility and the possibility for new insights gained due to the ear’s strength at pattern recognition. In this talk, Mark Ballora, professor of Music Technology at Penn State, will go over principles of how to represent information with sound, providing examples of work that he has done with researchers in a variety of areas, including cosmology, cardiology, meteorology, and marine biology.
Following this talk, Ballora will lead a workshop on the process of sonifying data, providing an introductory experience to using sound to represent properties of a dataset. For more information and to register for this workshop please visit An Introduction to Data Sonification.
