About This Workshop

The prestigious NSF: Graduate Research Fellowship Program provides support for graduate school via a stipend of $34,000/year and tuition/fees up to $12,000 for three years. This workshop will offer tips on preparing a strong application and in-person feedback on your essay drafts. Led by Morgan DiCarlo, a 2018 recipient, attendees will walk through an example of a successful application and learn how NSF applications are scored. The workshop will focus on a two-pronged approach, strengthening both Intellectual Merit and Broader Impacts to help participants structure a competitive NSF application. Refine your application with insights about standing out to the selection committee, and check that your application meets all the attributes which NSF looks for. Bring along your laptop or hard copies of your Research and Personal statement drafts!

Speaker Biography: Morgan DiCarlo graduated with a B.E. in Civil Engineering from Stony Brook in 2016 and her M.S. in Biological Systems Engineering from Virginia Tech in 2018. She is passionate about water systems and STEM engagement, and founded an engineering curriculum that has graduated more than 70 high school women. DiCarlo was named one of America's New Faces of Civil Engineering (2014) and selected for Nature Magazine's Innovating Science longlist (2018) for her commitment to outreach. DiCarlo is a TEDx speaker, former NASA intern and a recipient of the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship, which supports her PhD studies at NC State.
