Feed the Pack Update: Pizza, ice cream, and 358 pounds of donations!

The Libraries is a generous lot! Librarians and staff brought a staggering 358 pounds of donations for Feed the Pack to our 2018 Social Get-Together and Pizza Party on Friday, August 10. Organized by the Community Service Committee, the NCSU Libraries Staff Association, and the NCSU Librarians' Association, the event also included pizza provided by NCSULA, Howling Cow ice cream (including Wolftracks), and other refreshments.

Feed the Pack is the community food pantry here at NC State. Based out of Broughton Hall on North Campus (quite close to D. H. Hill Jr.), the community-based initiative is sustained by the greater NC State community to combat the food insecurity experienced by members of our Wolfpack family. Since January 2018, we’ve collected a total of 457 pounds of items for Feed the Pack.

In an effort to help promote Feed the Pack, some of the donations of food and hygiene items will be distributed during a pop-up event at D. H. Hill Jr. during Wolfpack Welcome Week on August 17 and August 21. Marian Fragola and Nicky Andrews will make kits of in-demand food pantry items that will be given to anyone who needs one. The event will introduce new students to Feed the Pack, de-stigmatize the act of taking free food items, encourage students to donate items themselves, and tie directly into our campus common reading, $2.00 a Day: Living on Almost Nothing in America.

And we can continue to donate to Feed the Pack at permanent donation locations in the Libraries:

  • D. H. Hill Jr.: outside the mail room
  • Hunt Library: room 5503 (printer room)
  • Design Library: staff room
  • Natural Resources Library: near the entrance
  • Veterinary Medicine Library: to the left of the main security gates

Feed the Pack particularly needs items such as fruit (canned fruit works best), hygiene products (soap, shampoo, deodorant, etc), and protein items. Items should:

  • Have a clear expiration date
  • Be non-breakable, non-perishable—cans please, no glass, no food requiring refrigeration
  • Be sealed—for example, a box of granola bars that has been opened is acceptable, if the remaining bars are individually sealed and the box has a clear expiration date
  • Not be bulk-sized items. While Costco-style massive jars of peanut butter (or similar bulk-sized items) may seem like a good idea, normal or individual sized items are much easier to give out.
