Libraries to host Critical Making Workshop as part of Campus Sustainability Week

October 7-13 is Campus Sustainability Week, and the Libraries is joining in on the fun! Along with all the other exciting events--a bike ride, a farm dinner, volleyball and soccer games, a poster session and lecture, an electric car show--the Libraries is hosting a Critical Making for Sustainability workshop.

“Critical Making” is a research method that posits that hands-on engagement with the material—objects, things, equipment, tools, etc.—can foster new ways of thinking and creating, beyond the traditional modes of teaching and learning. Through collaboration and iterative prototyping, working with emerging technologies and their analog counterparts opens up new modes of examining theoretical and philosophical questions, and engaging with practical social concerns such as poverty, global conflict, and environmental health, among others.

This workshop will offer an introduction to the theory and practice of Critical Making and facilitate a hands-on activity asking participants to prototype a technology contributing to sustainable practices on campus. As part of NCSU’s Campus Sustainability Week, there will be have items from the campus recycling program available to incorporate into your prototypes!
