Chancellor appoints Building Committee for D. H. Hill Library Stacks Renovation project

In February, Chancellor Randy Woodson announced the makeup of a nine-member Ad-hoc Building Committee for the D. H. Hill Jr. Library Stacks Renovation. The committee, which includes Vice Provost and Director of Libraries Susan K. Nutter and Associate Director of Learning Spaces and Capital Management Patrick Deaton, is responsible for representing the needs of the Libraries; the Division of Academic Student Affairs' Academic Success Center, which will be housed in D. H. Hill Jr.; and the interests of the university as a whole.

Designer selection is underway, and the design team should be announced later this month. The project will be in the design phase through most of 2017 and under construction for most of 2018, with an estimated construction completion date of fall 2018.

In addition to the ~8,000 sq ft allotted for the Academic Success Center, ~27,000 sq ft of Libraries space will be renovated and will include a new open stair connecting the Ask Us lobby to the second and third floors of the stack tower.

Chaired by Duane K. Larick, Senior Vice Provost, Academic Strategy and Resource Management, the committee is responsible for defining project requirements, reviewing and responding to the architect’s designs, coordinating with the project manager to ensure success, and balancing project priorities with the project budget. Other committee members are: Pete Fraccaroli, Engineer, Campus Life, Facilities; Louis Hunt, Senior Vice Provost & University Registrar, Enrollment Management & Services; Mike Mullen, Vice Chancellor & Dean, Academic Student Affairs; Walter Wessel, Professor, Economics, Poole College of Management; Barbara Windom, Director, University Tutorial Center; and Carrie Zelna, Associate Vice Provost, Office of Assessment. There are also five ex-officio members of the committee. Chris Johnson, with the Office of the University Architect, has been assigned as Project Manager. Lisa Johnson, University Architect, will ensure that the project provides the university with the high level of overall design consistent with the Physical Master Plan. Cameron Smith, Senior Director, Capital Project Management, will provide guidance in State Construction processess. David Rainer, Associate Vice Chancellor, Environmental Health & Public Safety and Jack Colby, Senior Director, Energy Systems, Facilities, will both strive to provide safe, efficient, maintainable facilities consistent with the University Design and Construction Guidelines.
