Coffee & Viz After Hours - Art and Entomology: Insect Portraits using Electron Microscopes

Explore the intersection of art and science through the work of photographer Daniel Kariko, Assistant Professor of Fine Art Photography at East Carolina University, and NC State entomologists. Kariko's work examines insects through 'portraits' inspired by the tradition of 17th Century Dutch masters and created with composites of a number of exposures from Scanning Electron Microscopy and Stereoscopic Microscopy. At this event, Kariko will discuss the motivation behind this work and the unique methods used to create these images. He will be accompanied by Dr. Matt Bertone from the Department of Entomology and Lea Shell from the Department of Applied Ecology to talk about the meaning of Kariko's work in the context of the practice and perception of entomology.
