A group of Libraries staff gathers after the stream walk

The Community Service Committee had a busy fall semester with a volunteer event at the Diaper Bank of North Carolina and their once-a-semester Stream Walk.

Beth Ashmore (lead), Troy Hurteau, Tyler Kroon, and Cas Saroza visited the Diaper Bank on October 2, repackaging 3T/4T pull-up diapers into packs of 25 to distribute to the community. The effort was part of a new federal program to offer diaper assistance—the first program of its kind in the United States. The team also dropped off diaper and period product donations. Working with six other volunteers from other organizations, the Libraries group was able to pack 7,220 diapers estimated to cover 240 babies.

If you have new or open diapers that you no longer need, please consider donating them to the Diaper Bank. Contact Beth Ashmore (beashmor@ncsu.edu) to arrange the pickup of your donation.

The Libraries' Stream Walk was on October 5 with participants Taylor Wolford (lead), Katelan Haynes, Hannah Rainey, Adam Phillips, Mattison Domke-Latz, Reverie Molina, Ashley Bandy, Michael Fairback, Matthew Fioti, and Shaun (and Atticus!) Bennett. The Raleigh Stormwater Management Division provided safety vests, vinyl gloves, and trash bags.

Lucky to have a sunny day, the team walked along our adopted stream that surrounds a retention pond, as well as the roadway along the stream. Some interesting things of note that were picked up include an old goalpost and a full wardrobe of discarded clothing items. An estimated 70 pounds of trash was collected and removed!
