Rainey appointed Academic Technology Librarian

Hannah Rainey has been appointed as Academic Technology Librarian effective 1 July 2018.

As Academic Technology Librarian, Rainey will consult with and advise faculty and students in the use of advanced technologies for research, teaching, and learning, including those technologies employed in the Libraries’ high tech spaces. She will play an important role in facilitating outreach, managing projects, assessing infrastructure, and serving as a technical liaison to integrate advanced technologies into research and teaching efforts on campus.

Rainey is currently an NCSU Libraries Fellow assigned to Research Engagement, where she consults with faculty and graduate students throughout the research lifecycle to identify and advise on information resources, technological solutions, and workflows. She develops and leads workshops on data visualization topics such as Tableau and Infographics, as well as instructional sessions on discipline-specific research databases, citation management, and grant finding. She is also assigned to a strategic initiative, Effective Stewardship of Library Data. In that role she has inventoried data collected by library systems and staff, analyzed whether the data are sensitive according to federal, state, campus, and library guidelines, and developed recommendations and best practices for data retention and access.

Rainey recently presented Don’t be so sensitive: a data security journey at LITA Forum and co-presented Digital Life Decoded: a user-centered approach to cyber-security and privacy, a webinar for LITA Online Learning. In 2017 she was the recipient of a LITA Forum Scholarship and an ACRL Spectrum Scholarship. She serves on NC State’s Gender & Equity Research Symposium planning committee, the Asian Pacific American Librarians Association awards committee, and the Joint Conference of Librarians of Color registration committee.

Rainey joined the NCSU Libraries after completing the Master of Science in Information Studies at the University of Texas at Austin. She holds the Bachelor of Arts in Cinema and Media Studies from Wellesley College.
