Acquisitions & Discovery team authors book chapter

The new book Transforming Technical Services through Training and Development opens with a chapter authored by the Acquisitions & Discovery team of Maria Collins, Xiaoyan Song, Lynn Whittenberger, and Beth Ashmore. The book is published by ALA Editions in collaboration with CORE publishing and edited by Marlee Givens and Sofia Slutskaya.

The chapter, entitled "Growing a Technical Services Learning Culture at the NC State University Libraries," describes how the department has built a training culture since the 2011 merger of the acquisitions and cataloging departments—from the initial cross-training of the catalogers learning acquisitions work and vice versa, through exposure learning to introduce staff to new topics and technology, to more individualized core competencies training.

“Writing the chapter was a very collaborative effort because each of us had experience with different kinds of training in the department,” Beth Ashmore says. “Maria provided all of the background on what made the department merger cross-training program a success, while Lynn, Yan, and I have more experience with the targeted and informal learning opportunities we are using today.”

Congrats to the team on their accomplishment!
