The Special Collections Research Center is very excited to announce that the collection guide for the recently processed Men’s Basketball Audiovisual Materials (UA 015.402) is now available online. The collection contains footage from many NC State men’s basketball games from as early as 1939 to as recent as 2014. These recordings were taken in many formats, including film, VHS, BetaCam videotape, and DVDs.  Some have been digitized and have been made available for viewing on our Rare and Unique Digital Collections site.

The men’s basketball team for NC State (then referred to as North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts) first began competing in 1911 as the “Red Terrors” until 1947 when all the athletic teams associated with the university adopted the team name “Wolfpack.” This collection contains film and video of some of the team’s most historic moments including both of NC State’s NCAA Championship victories. The first of these was won in 1974 under Coach Norm Sloan, and the second in 1983 with the team known as the “Cardiac Pack” coached by the legendary Jim Valvano.  The materials capture many ACC tournaments as well as older basketball tournaments such as the Dixie Classic and the Southeastern Conference Tournament.

Although they make up most of the content of the collection, game footage and audio recordings are not the only things to be found. For many of the years audiovisual recordings were created, there are also highlight reels of each season showcasing the best moments of the season and giving a taste of student life at NC State. Here is an example that has been digitized.  One can also find recordings of practices, scrimmages, interviews of players and coaches, television specials, training camps, coaches shows, and more.
