See the solar eclipse at the Libraries!

An eclipse pattern shown over time.

Did you see the eclipse? That’s a question you’re going to want to answer “yes” to.

On the afternoon of Monday, Aug. 21, join the NCSU Libraries and the College of Sciences to celebrate the solar eclipse! There hasn’t been a total solar eclipse over the continental U.S. in 99 years, so you won’t want to miss it. In Raleigh, we'll be able to see about 92% coverage of the sun, starting at 1:16 pm, peaking at 2:44 pm, and ending by 4:06 pm.

“Raleigh will see a partial solar eclipse, but the path of totality is only a few hours drive away in South Carolina and western North Carolina,” says Heidi Tebbe, Collections & Research Librarian for Engineering and Data Science. “To prepare, I've been reading David Baron's American Eclipse, I ordered eclipse glasses (and some souvenirs), and have made plans to head to South Carolina.”

“However, there's always a chance that the weather will not be cooperative, in which case I'll be checking out the same livestreams that will be playing at the Hill and Hunt libraries.” The Veterinary Medicine Library (VML) will also be hosting a livestream.

The Libraries provides three venues where you can drop in and watch a live video stream of the eclipse featuring NASA experts along the path of totality; live feeds from NASA aircraft, balloons, and the International Space Station; and views of the eclipse from around the United States. From 1-4 p.m., screens will carry eclipse simulcasts in the Fishbowl at the James B. Hunt Jr. Library, the Fishbowl Forum at the D. H. Hill Jr. Library, and at the VetMed Library.

Eclipse frenzy will take over the Brickyard, too. The College of Sciences will start their Eclipse Day Celebration at 12:30 p.m. outside D. H. Hill Jr. Library, providing activities and citizen science projects and eclipse glasses and pinhole projectors for safe sun viewing.

Visit the NCSU Libraries table on the Brickyard for:
