Join the NCSU Libraries for a “Read Smart” book discussion of Anne Tyler’s novel Vinegar Girl, a reimagining of Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew,” at Raleigh’s Cameron Village Regional Library (1930 Clark Ave.) on Wednesday, August 23 at 7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

Marvin Hunt of NC State's Department of English, will lead the discussion. Tyler will not be in attendance.

Tyler wrote Vinegar Girl as part of the Hogarth Shakespeare project, which sees Shakespeare’s works retold by acclaimed and bestselling novelists of today. The series launched in October 2015 and will be published in at least 20 countries.

Of Tyler’s novel, Jane Smiley said in The New York Times Book Review: “Shakespeare… would be pleased, I am sure… Novels such as Anne Tyler’s, which are so precise and current, are like photographs or digital clock faces that tell us where we are and where we are coming from at the same time. Vinegar Girl is an earthy reflection of this fleeting moment, both lively and thoughtful.”

“Read Smart” is a collaboration between NCSU Libraries Presents and Cameron Village Regional Library.
