Library Journal has named NCSU Libraries Director of Program Planning and Outreach Marian Fragola a 2018 “Mover & Shaker.” Lauded for her “knack for creating programs that span disciplines and are open to the public,” Fragola is recognized for developing events such as State of the Sciences Live! and the Making Space series.

“My goal is to have [our] programs be informative, inspirational, fun, and, when they are at their best, transformational,” Fragola said to Library Journal.

Fragola is one of NC State’s great cross-pollinators. She curates and organizes a packed calendar of Libraries events—all free and open to the public—that celebrate and reflect the range of academic talents, cultural interests, and diversity at the university and in the surrounding communities. Through her award-winning NCSU Libraries Presents series, Marian works with students and faculty from every corner of the university, and with alumni and community members both local and far-flung, to develop compelling and innovative programming. Her ability to create public programs that make connections across often-siloed parts of the university has highlighted and enhanced the noteworthy work being done at NC State and built lasting, multidisciplinary partnerships throughout the university. As importantly, her programs give members of the public access to the exciting results of these partnerships, breaking down barriers between academia and the local community.

"I am incredibly proud and gratified to have Marian receive this well-deserved recognition,” says Greg Raschke, Interim Vice Provost and Director of Libraries. “Marian has done wonders in building a diverse suite of events into a popular and thriving program that benefits the University community and entire Triangle area. She is an innovator and connector, the very essence of a ‘Mover & Shaker.’"

Annually since 2002, the trade publication Library Journal has chosen a class of innovative librarians and library staff members from an international pool of nearly 300 nominees. This year’s “Movers & Shakers” class will be acknowledged at the American Library Association annual conference in New Orleans in June.
