Libraries offers Open Access Week workshops

Open International Access Week Logo w/ dates

The NCSU Libraries will host a slate of workshops during Open Access Week, October 23-29. The week is an international celebration of open practices that helps advocate for free access to scholarly outputs.

This year’s theme, “Open in order to…” invites researchers to answer the question of what can be accomplished by making resources without copyright restrictions openly available. How does open source code, open data, open science, and open scholarship increase discovery, innovation, and reproducibility? The NCSU Libraries will explore these questions in a series of pop up events, talks, and workshops about the advantages of open practices at NC State.

The Open Access Week 2017 NCSU Libraries program includes:

Open Culture Pop-up Events
D. H. Hill Jr. Library Ask Us Lobby
Wednesday, Oct. 25, 12:30 p.m.-1:30 p.m.
Friday, Oct. 27, 12:30 p.m.-1:30 p.m.

Join NCSU’s Copyright and Digital Scholarship librarians for informal discussions about open research and open access publishing. We will be providing more information about how to choose a journal to publish in and how you can identify predatory publishers. We will also be handing out free OA buttons and keychains. Drop by our table on Thursday, October 26th and Friday, October 27th to learn more about how the Libraries can support your research and publishing interests.

Open in Order to Build: Arduino workshop
D. H. Hill Library Makerspace
Wednesday, Oct. 25, 3:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m.

As part of Open Access Week, we will be discussing how open practices can increase innovation, design, and creativity. Arduino, an open hardware and software platform, releases all of its hardware design files under a Creative Commons license, allowing you to reproduce electronic prototypes and build interactions between computers and the physical world. In this workshop, you’ll gain hands-on experience working with open source code to create custom prototypes of electronic devices.

Open in Order to . . . ?
D. H. Hill Library Assembly Room
Thursday, Oct. 26, 3:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m.

The NCSU Libraries will hold a discussion by Dr. Martin Hubbe, Dr. Maria T. Gallardo-Williams, and a graduate student, Vallari Sheel, from the Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources. They will discuss academic social media and research sharing services such as Academia.edu, ResearchGate, and Sci-Hub. These are popular websites for sharing research papers, but raise fundamental questions about what “openness” means. How compatible is open with for-profit actors, pirate sites, and others that stretch the boundaries of scholarly sharing?

Open in Order to Create: 3D Printing & Design
D. H. Hill Library Makerspace
Friday, Oct. 27, 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.

In this workshop, we will discuss Creative Commons licensing and how to identify open files. You will learn the basics of 3D printing and 3D design tools and gain hands-on time using the open source Lulzbot 3D printers we have available in the libraries. We will also discuss how to publish your projects online and how to make your work more openly accessible to the public-at-large.
