Libraries launches two Open Access publishing agreements

NC State researchers can publish OA for free on Cambridge University Press and Wiley

The NC State University Libraries has entered agreements with Cambridge University Press (CUP) and Wiley that allow NC State authors to publish for free in open access journals. Both agreements begin on Jan. 1, 2022.

While open access publishing has brought a substantial cost savings for readers of scholarly work, academic authors often have to pay to publish their work in open access journals and publications—CUP estimates an average cost of $3,000 per article. These arrangements alleviate those costs for NC State-affiliated authors.

"These agreements with Wiley and Cambridge University Press are big steps forward for NC State,” says David Goldsmith, Associate Director for Collections & Research Services. “Many NC State researchers want to increase the impact of their scholarship with open access publishing and we're delighted to make this a financially possible option for more authors."

CUP Read & Publish
The CUP Read & Publish three-year agreement provides system-wide institutional access to all Cambridge University Press journals. The agreement also offsets the costs of open access publishing of eligible works authored by NC State faculty and researchers, who will not have to pay Author Processing Charges (APCs) when they publish with Cambridge University Press journals in order to make their articles open access.

Wiley Read and Publish
The Carolina Consortium is in the process of finalizing a groundbreaking Wiley Read and Publish three-year agreement that will provide reader access to nearly 1500 journals, plus a shared pool of no-cost Open Access vouchers equivalent to the consortium's average annual Wiley hybrid article output over the past three years. Authors affiliated with participating Carolina Consortium institutions (including NC State) may publish primary research and review articles as open access in any of Wiley's hybrid journals at no charge to the author, subject to availability of sufficient funds in eligible Carolina Consortium institutions' Wiley Open Access Accounts.
