Digital Media workshops for spring 2019

The NC State University Libraries offers a variety of workshops in Digital Media for students, all of which require no prior experience. Participants will learn video and audio production, DJing, sampling, and beatmaking. Digital Media workshops this semester include “Making Videos at the Library,” “Intro to DJing,” “Record, Edit, and Produce Audio,” and much more. And basic Digital Media Orientation sessions give you reservation access to the media rooms at Hill and Hunt.

The Digital Media workshops for the spring 2019 semester are:

Orientation: Digital Media Making in the Libraries
Many dates throughout the semester, check the schedule
Digital Media Lab (D. H. Hill Library) & 4K Video Studio (Hunt Library)
Excited to make videos and movies, record podcasts and music, digitize records, cassettes, and VHS tapes, learn graphic design, or make an awesome poster or presentation? You can do all of this and more utilizing the tools, spaces, and experts in Library Media Spaces like the Digital Media Lab Studio and Music Booths at D. H. Hill Jr. and the Media Production Studios and Music Rooms at Hunt. In this 30-minute, hands-on orientation you'll see the wide range of media making resources and instruction services at the Libraries, see the green screen in action, make a recording, and get to know the people who help make it easy for you to make media.

This session is required in order to reserve media spaces in the Libraries.

Record, Edit, and Produce Audio at the Libraries

Learn how to record, edit, and share audio in the Libraries Media Spaces in this interactive workshop. You'll record your voice using library equipment, edit your recording, and learn how to share it with others. Additionally, you'll have the opportunity to become familiar with the in-room audio equipment, and, using GarageBand, learn the basics of the MIDI keyboard, practice audio editing, understand multitrack recording, and get to know the powerful production and vintage audio format digitization opportunities these rooms have to offer, and more. Appropriate for beginners but also for those at any skill level who wish to better familiarize themselves with Library media spaces while gaining essential skills for both school and personal projects.

Making Videos at the Library

Learn how to plan, produce, and edit a video using library equipment in this hands-on workshop. You'll be taught the basics of script-writing and storyboarding, shooting video, and editing, and you will, by the end of the project, complete a short video with cuts, transitions, text, and a soundtrack. Appropriate for beginners or for those at any skill level who wish to better familiarize themselves with library production spaces, iMovie, technology lending devices, and gain essential skills for both school and personal projects.

ITTC 1A/B (D. H. Hill)
This is an interactive workshop that will introduce the basics of mixing, Serato functions, history, and other fundamentals to the art of DJing. Participants will have the opportunity to play with Stanton Vinyl Turntables as well as Pioneer DJ Controllers. This workshop is intended as an introduction, but open to individuals of all skill sets.

360° Video Creation Made Easy

Have you ever wanted to create 360° videos? In this workshop, you will learn how to engage, explore, and tell stories with immersive imagery using 360° videos. This introductory workshop will teach you how to storyboard videos, operate a Ricoh Theta 360° camera, and go over the workflow of planning, capturing, and editing 360° video, adding 360° metadata to published videos, and how to upload the video to YouTube for 360° viewing.

Sampling and Beatmaking
Thursday, Feb. 7, 6:00 p.m.-7:30 p.m., Digital Media Lab, D. H. Hill
Produce a one-of-a-kind beat from start to finish using the powerful Ableton Live digital audio workstation and a turntable in this hands-on workshop. Led by digital media practitioners at the library, you'll crate dig for records, listen to them using library turntables in audio production spaces, sample them, and then use Ableton Live to turn that sample into your own music creation. No prior experience necessary.
