Austen 200

Jane Austen (1775–1817) remains one of the world's most celebrated authors. This year will mark the 200th anniversary of Jane Austen’s death, and to commemorate this bicentenary, the NCSU Libraries, NC State LIVE, and University Theatre have joined forces for a series of Austen-centric events from interactive video art to book discussions, film screenings to performances.

We hope you will join us at the D. H. Hill Jr. Library on Wednesday, September 13 at 8:00pm for a special screening of Pride & Prejudice & Zombies. Five Shaolin-trained sisters in 19th century England must cope with the pressures to marry while protecting themselves from a growing population of zombies. This 2016 film is based on Seth Grahame-Smith's 2009 novel, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, which parodies the 1813 Austen novel Pride and Prejudice. Directed by Burr Steers, who wrote the adapted screenplay, this movie is rated PG-13 for zombie violence and action and brief suggestive material.

Then on Monday, September 25 at 7:00pm, we invite you to the Cameron Village Regional Library for a discussion about Northanger Abbey, moderated by Dr. Sharon Setzer, professor of English at NC State. Northanger Abbey was the first of Austen's novels to be completed for publication, in 1803, but was published after her death in 1817. A satire of the popular Gothic novels of the time, Northanger Abbey is a spirited comedy of manners.
