The Spice of Life' was a 13-episode television series aired by (UK) Channel 4 in 1983, with narration by actor Edward Woodward. Each half-hour episode covered a different cooking spice or herb, including information on how it grows and is used in various locations around the world as well as that's spice's history and impact on cultural exchange. These episodes are now all (or nearly all) available on Youtube and, in 2023, they've become something of an obsession for my friends and I.

If you're asking yourself, 'should I watch a forty-year-old British miniseries about cooking spices?,' I'd suggest you try Episode 3: 'The Master Spice' on for size. Without spoiling too much, this episode basically convinced me that black pepper immeasurably shaped the global economies we live in today- and about 50% of the fun facts I've shared with people this year were lifted from this series.
