Dig into the DNA of Delftia—the microbe that poops gold

Biomineralized gold left by the bacterium.

Join the NCSU Libraries for an in-depth examination of the Delftia DNA found by the Wolfpack Citizen Science Challenge. The Libraries hosts “Wherefore art thou, Delftia?: Getting down to the DNA,” a free bioinformatics workshop, on Wednesday, March 28, 4:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m. in the D. H. Hill Jr. Library Fishbowl Forum.

NC State students, the BitBot, and the Genomic Sciences Laboratory have worked hard to uncover the genetic code of the microbe Delftia acidovorans—the microbe that poops gold and laughs in the face of mouthwash and lives on campus with us. But how do we make sense of that string of As, Cs, Gs, and Ts?

In this hands-on workshop, participants will use free online tools from the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) to do real bioinformatic analysis of the data. No previous experience or subject expertise is necessary, just enthusiasm and lots of curiosity.
