New Head of Metadata and Cataloging

Erin Stalberg The NCSU Libraries has appointed Erin S. Stalberg as Head of Metadata and Cataloging, effective September 24, 2007.

The Metadata and Cataloging department combines traditional cataloging services with new methods of analysis and description to facilitate discovery and retrieval from a vast array of resources available from the NCSU Libraries. As Head of Metadata and Cataloging, Stalberg will provide leadership during a critical and exciting period of change for technical services, brought about by emerging technologies and the changing composition of research library collections. In this role she will direct the enhancement of metadata infrastructures and practices within the department, while collaborating with colleagues across the Libraries to support growing metadata and digital collections initiatives.

Stalberg currently serves as Head of Cataloging Services for the University of Virginia Library, where she manages a staff of twenty to provide cataloging, metadata, and related technical services for the library system. Among her responsibilities, she chairs the Library's Metadata Steering Group, leading the development of metadata standards, best practices, and user interface recommendations for the University of Virginia's ongoing digital library implementation. Stalberg recently returned from an assignment as the on-board librarian for the University of Virginia's Semester at Sea program, where she provided library services to students and faculty on a voyage around the world. She previously served as Associate Head of Cataloging Services, University of Virginia Library, and as Cataloging/Technical Systems Librarian for the Francis A. Drexel Library, Saint Joseph's University.

Highly involved in professional activities, Stalberg serves as a reviewer for Resource Description & Access, as a trainer for Metadata Applications & Standards, Library of Congress/Association for Library Collections & Technical Services (ALCTS) Cataloging for the 21st Century, and as Webmaster for the Women's Studies Section, Association of College and Research Libraries. Recent presentations include From "Project" to "Workflow": Mainstreaming Non-MARC Metadata Creation into the Cataloging Department, ALCTS Networked Resources and Metadata Interest Group, June 2007 and Using a Wiki for Staff Communication (with C. Ruotolo), Virginia Library Association, November 2006. Stalberg holds the Master of Science in Library and Information Science from Drexel University and the Bachelor of Arts cum laude and with High Honors from Mount Holyoke College.
