ARTstor Image Database

The NCSU Libraries now offers an excellent new image database, ARTstor, a collection of images documenting art, design, architecture, history, and culture. In addition to the images and related data, ARTstor provides tools for users to use the images to create their own groups of images and presentations, which can be displayed in a classroom, mounted on a website for student use, or linked to a course website.

ARTstor contains several collections, which can be searched individually or collectively. The Image Gallery and Art History Survey Collection are broad, general collections intended to serve the needs of faculty teaching art and architectural history, and cover the essential images in these areas. In addition, ARTstor includes more specialized design collections, such as The Museum of Modern Art Architecture and Design Collection, which provides images of architectural drawings and photographs, graphic design such as posters and advertisements, and documentation of three-dimensional objects such as furniture and cars.

Faculty and students across many fields may also find ARTstor useful for its rich historical and cultural content as well. Photographic images drawn from the Smithsonian Institution's Native American Art and Culture collection, Harvard University's Schlesinger History of Women in America collection, and the Huntington Archive of Asian Art offer visual support for historical, anthropological, religious studies, and other disciplines. The images of 15th to 19th Century European prints from the Illustrated Bartsch will hold interest for anyone interested in visual representation across the areas of literature, politics, philosophy, religion, natural history, and more.

ARTstor may be accessed through the NCSU Libraries' database list or the online catalog . For a direct link to ARTstor and related subject guides, visit this page .
