New British and European Primary Source Materials Now Available

An pen and wash illustration of a mountainous landscape. A river flows through the foreground and background, cutting through wooded areas and the mountains. A ruined castle with no roof takes center-left of the frame. The sky is cloudy and there is a full moon, with a lightning strike coming down from the sky.

View of a ruined castle at night. 1992.37.1.30 c. 1760 Gilpin, John Bernard, Capt. (1701-1776) Pen and wash on paper. "The Wordsworth Trust, Dove Cottage, Grasmere, UK" Material sourced from The Wordsworth Trust, Dove Cottage, Grasmere, UK 11-Sep-23 Adam Matthew Digital Limited

The NC State University Libraries now provides access to several collections of newspapers, primary accounts, government documents, and more, highlighting European history and culture from the 1500s to the present.

Providing a firsthand account of the daily lives, events, and debates that shaped 18th to early 20th century Britain, the British Library Newspapers highlight diverse regional attitudes, cultures, and vernaculars that were otherwise left uncaptured in the time period’s national press. With more than 240 newspaper titles, explore topics from working class movements and the industrial revolution to women’s advice columns.

London Low Life features on-the-ground accounts from the streets of London: slang dictionaries, cartoons, and street cries encompass working class culture and street life of the 19th century. The collection includes holdings from the Lilly Library and special collections at  Indiana University, Bloomington.

The rest of the collections provide European perspectives on topics from colonization to imperialism, to daily life and culture.
