3D Scanning Studio coming in September

3D scanning in action with booth and lighting system.

This September, D. H. Hill Jr. is adding a new, fully staffed 3D Scanning Studio on the West Wing’s second floor, directly across from our Virtual Reality Studio.

We will have workstations for 3D scanning (with a turntable capable of full-body, 3D selfies!) and photogrammetry (a photograph-alignment technology). You can do 3D scanning and photogrammetry from start to finish, creating 3D models, and using post-scanning software to manipulate and edit those models.

To use the scanning studio, you’ll need to attend a regular offering of the one-hour 3D Scanning Studio Orientation. Then you’ll be able to reserve the space in Reporter. The room will be open for reservations during two four-hour blocks per day. In addition to the orientation, the Libraries will offer workshops in "Getting Started with 3D Scanning" and "Getting Started with Photogrammetry." One-on-one consultation time will also be available upon request. Register for orientations and reserve the space at https://www.lib.ncsu.edu/spaces/3d-scanning-studio.

Improvements are coming to the Digital Media Lab Studio as well. We have added fixed lighting and will be providing better spatial guidelines in the room for the green screen and video recording services. Now, when you enter the room, there's a single switch that turns on all of the studio lighting which is set appropriately for recording a figure in front of our green screen. There will also be a fixed, high-quality, professional video camera in the room, along with microphone options. We’ve also added markers on the floor for ideal camera and subject placement to make recording that much easier.

Changes should be complete by the first week of September. We’ll update the written guidelines available in the studio, and library staff is available in the Digital Media Lab weekdays from 4:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. or by making an appointment directly through our tech consultation service.
