Records relating to projects and initiatives undertaken by the Department of Textile and Apparel Technology and Management in the College of Textiles at North Carolina State University and related programs for the years 1924 - 1985. These records contain articles, brochures, budget records, clippings, photographs, memoranda, and correspondence. Included is information on faculty members, lectures, and department finances.
The School of Textiles (later College of Textiles) at North Carolina State University began classes in the fall of 1899, primarily due to Daniel Tompkins's interest in having a textile program at what was then the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts. Since 1963, the Department of Textile and Apparel Technology and Management (TATM) has functioned as a discrete department (albeit under several different names) within the the College of Textiles. Of course, the College of Textiles has conducted research since its earliest days, both independently and in collaboration with corporate and government partners. And it appears that many of the College's pre-1963 research records have been merged with those of the Department of Textile and Apparel Technology and Management.
Biographical/historical note
Textiles education at North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University) began in 1899 due to Daniel Tompkins's interest in having a textile program. George Franks Ivey taught the first course in textiles. The next year the college expanded this program; Ivey left and Henry M. Wilson joined the faculty as an instructor in cotton manufacturing. The college offered courses such as carding and spinning, weaving, textile designing, and textile chemistry and dyeing. The courses provided students with specialized expertise to operate mills and use advanced scientific research in the textiles industry.
Since emerging as its own department within the School of Textiles in 1963, the Department of Textile and Apparel Technology and Management has been known by several departmental names: Textile Technology (1963 - 1973); Textile Materials and Management (1973 - 1981); Textile Management and Technology (1981 - 1985); Textile and Apparel Management (1985 - 1996); and finally Textile and Apparel Technology and Management (1996 - present). In all its incarnations, the department has educated undergraduate and graduate students for careers in the fiber, textile, and apparel industry complex. The mission of the department has been accomplished by offering Bachelor of Science, Master of Science, and Ph.D. degree programs that seek to develop leadership and promote academic excellence for both students and faculty. These programs have been designed to provide students with a background in fundamental concepts of scientific, technological, and management principles, and an ability to define and solve challenging technological problems through advanced experimental and computational techniques. An essential component of the department's mission has been the development of new knowledge through research and the subsequent transfer of this knowledge to both the textile industry complex and society.
The following list of department heads only covers the period from the early 1970s on. Although the department was founded a decade earlier, before 1972 it was assigned a "Graduate Administrator" in lieu of a department head.
