Founded in 1951 as the College Union Board of Chairmen and renamed in the early 1970s, the Union Activities Board develops and carries out social and cultural programs for students. The mission statement specified in the Union Activities Board bylaws, as revised on 18 March 2013, was “For students by students, the Union Activities Board creates innovative activities that stimulate, motivate, educate, and involve the student body.“ Seven committees were chartered in the bylaws as revised on 18 March 2013: Black Students Board, Diviersity Activities Board, Films, Issues and Ideas, Late Night and Concerts, Leisure and Entertainment, and Marketing.

The mission statement specified in the Union Activities Board bylaws, as revised on 18 March 2013, was “For students by students, the Union Activities Board creates innovative activities that stimulate, motivate, educate, and involve the student body.“
Seven committees were chartered in the bylaws as revised on 18 March 2013. Their duties and areas of concern were defined as:
1. Black Students Board: To bring unity and excitement among students, and to provide a social outlet, by creating political, spiritual, and cultural programs and activities.
2. Diversity Activities Board: To promote, produce, facilitate, and educate by conducting events that help students to become more aware and appreciate other backgrounds, cultures, and perspectives
3. Films: To provide students at N.C. State University with engaging films at the Campus Cinema and fun promotions, programs, and events related to those films.
4. Issues and Ideas: To provide students with information about current issues and a forum in which to discuss them.
5. Late Night and Concerts: To provide various forms of late night programs, and to plan and coordinate a variety of concerts for the student body.
6. Leisure and Entertainment: To provide various forms of general entertainment for the student body.
7. Marketing: To promote and publicize the Union Activities Board and its events through the use of all current marketing techniques in conjunction with the two Graphic Designers.

The Posters and Flyers Series contains materials promoting events sponsored by the Union Activities Board. The bulk of these are for dramatic plays that were produced by Thompson Theatre, but there are also some flyers for talks given by special guests to campus. Additionally, there are lists of films that were put on by the Union Activities Board Film Committee and Activity Calendars for other events. Materials range in date from the 1970s to 1991.

The Thompson Theatre Performances series contains flyers and programs relating to plays that were performed at Thompson Theatre. These dramatic performances were mostly sponsored by the Union Activities Board. Materials range in date from 1963 to 2000.

Because of the nature of certain archival formats, including digital and audio-visual materials, access will require additional advanced notice. Copies of unrestricted digital files will be provided for use in the SCRC Reading Room upon request. Access will be provided to use copies of unrestricted digital files rather than carrier media, such as CDs, DVDs, and floppy disks.
