The book's description from its publisher Edwards Brothers states:
The idea for North Carolina State University began with the notion that the traditional, classical education, transplanted from Europe, was inadequate to train the men who would promote the economic development that nineteenth-century Americans believed was necessary to improve the life of the common man. In North Carolina, the impetus took a special form, derived from the fusion of the New South reformers, who sought to remake the region through industrialization, and the Farmer’s Alliance, who saw the land-grant movement as a way to promote an equitable society for the farmer. By the late twentieth century, the university evolved from a college of applied science and technology for “farmers and mechanics,” to a major research institution that played a role in the state’s economy. Throughout its history, the university has always aimed at the primary land-grant goal—to serve as the “People’s University.”
North Carolina State University: A Narrative History describes the institution’s transition from A & M College to NC State University. It also examines the university’s development in the context of events in North Carolina and America. An effort is also made to study NC State University’s growth in light of changes in higher education. Published in conjunction with the university’s centennial celebration, it is an analysis of the institution’s first one hundred years.
The book's author, Alice Elizabeth Reagan, was born in Utica, NY and rasied in Deerfield, MA. Reagan received a Bachelor of Arts in political science and history from the State University of New York at Albany, and a Master of Arts in history from North Carolina State University. She served as editor for The Maryland Historian and The Southern Historian.
The book's patrons were the North Carolina State University Foundation and the North Carolina State University Alumni Association. The Alumni Association is a part of Alumni Relations, the unit at the University that officially interacts with graduates of the university. The Alumni Association was established in 1895, six years after the first classes were held at North Carolina College of Agricultural and Mechanic Arts (now North Carolina State University). The 1986-1987 narrative and pictorial histories of the university were published under the auspices of the Alumni Association.
The North Carolina State University Foundation was founded in 1942 as a public charitable organization to support university-wide initiatives.
