North Carolina State University, Information Technology Division, Triangle Universities Computation Center Records 1964-1991

The Triangle Universities Computation Center was a nonprofit organization formed in 1965 by representatives of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, North Carolina State University, and Duke University. The common goal was to provide mainframe computing services such as electronic data and batch processing to the universities, Research Triangle Institute (RTI) and other educational institutions in North Carolina. The presidents and chancellors of the three universities, Chancellor John T. Caldwell, North Carolina State University; Chancellor Paul F. Sharp, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; and President Douglas Maitland King, of Duke University met and unanimously approved the establishment of a joint computation center, located in Research Triangle Park. The Triangle Universities Computation Center was dissolved in 1990.

The Triangle Universities Computation Center was incorporated as a non-profit corporation, wholly owned by the three universities, on August 23, 1965. Dr. J. K. Ferrell, Professor of Chemical Engineering, was named Acting President for the year 1965 to 1966. Initial funding for the center was made possible by grants from the National Science Foundation. The center also provided information processing services to governmental and industrial laboratories in the Research Triangle area. The Triangle Universities Computation Center dissolved in 1990 due to financial difficulties, the increased use of personal computers, and disagreements among the partners.

The North Carolina State University, Information Technology Division, Triangle Universities Computation Center records contain meeting minutes, correspondence, publications, grant proposals from Triangle Universities Computation Center to the National Science Foundation, newsletters, budgets, annual reports, financial records, documentation, indexes to documentation, and other miscellaneous files relating to the startup and operation of the Triangle Universities Computation Center. Materials are dated from 1964 to 1991.
