The Harrye B. Lyons Design Library Vertical Files, 1939-1992, contains books, serials, brochures, and other reference materials relating to various subjects in architecture gathered by the Harrye B. The James N. Sherrill Architectural Drawings contain the architectural drawings of James N. Sherrill from 1956 to 1968 with most buildings located in Hickory, North Carolina but a few in other locations such as Blowing Rock, North Carolina, and Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Most of the drawings are for homes and residences of local families. However, one set shows the drawings for the Addition to Gardner Hall at North Carolina State of the University of North Carolina at Raleigh in 1964. James N. Sherrill was an American Institute of Architects (AIA) architect who was born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, in 1925. He graduated from Reynolds High School in 1943 and spent three years in the Navy before beginning the Architectural Engineering program at North Carolina State University in 1946. He graduated from what became the School of Design in 1951. After interning for several Raleigh architects, he worked for Clemmer and Horton in Hickory, North Carolina, from 1953 to 1958. Four of his buildings designed while there won American Institute of Architects North Carolina (AIANC) awards. Sherrill started his own firm in 1958. He won another AIANC design award in 1962 for a Northwestern Bank branch in Hickory. He designed an addition to Gardner Hall (now Thomas Hall) on the North Carolina State University campus in 1965 that was completed in 1967. Sherrill passed away on 2012 May 9. Less

This collection documents Jehu Dewitt Paulson's career as an artist and educator and contains drawings, paintings, prints, plates, photographs and illustrations for published and unpublished manuscripts. The Personal files include Paulson's application for a Guggenheim Fellowship (1934), photographs of Paulson and his family, certificates of memberships to various societies and fraternities, a curriculum vitae, and notes from his college years. The North Carolina State College series includes class notes, a partial history of the Department of Architecture, course materials and notes on the appreciation of paintings. The Building Images subseries contains photographs, pencil sketches and plates of various campus buildings, including Memorial Tower, Primrose Hall, and Pullen Hall. Files of picture clippings on varied subjects (architecture, bridge building, interiors, landscaping, murals, paintings and sculpture, etc.) comprise another series. The Writings, Research and Inventions series contains identifications of paintings (by painter and subject), correspondence regarding the identification process, and published writings, including The Exterior Form of the Solitary Atom (1952), and unpublished manuscripts ("Appreciation of Painting," "Escape from Atlantis," and "People Makers, a Fantasy of Evolution"). Among the inventions are plans for an elevated storage tower and for an improved internal combustion rotary motor. Also included in this series are subject files of picture clippings on varied subjects (architecture, bridge building, interiors, landscaping, murals, paintings and sculpture, etc.). The Paintings, Sketches, Drawings, and Designs series comprise a good representation of Paulson's original artwork. This series also contains drawings and related papers on The Forms of the Elementary Atoms and The Periodic Law. The Photographic series contains undated photos of various atoms and elements. The Ligon Flynn Papers consists of architectural drawings, extensive project files and related architectural records. Notable projects documented in the collection include residences on Figure Eight Island, such as the Jones, Mahan, Bell, Hughes, Ellison, and Monroe houses; as well as the NC State University Student Center annex; Lower Cape Fear Hospice, St. John’s Museum of Art, and Flynn's own office at 15 S. Second St. in Wilmington, N.C. The collection also includes the notebooks of Ligon Flynn’s associate, Harold Garriss, whose seven 120-sheet spiral notebooks cover the years 1981 to 1993. Ligon Flynn (1931-2010) was born near Tryon, North Carolina. He graduated from the School of Design at what was then North Carolina State College in 1959 and taught at the School of Design from 1963 to 1967 while also in private practice. In 1969, he founded the firm of Ligon B. Flynn, Architect, in Raleigh. The firm moved to Wilmington, North Carolina in 1972. Flynn’s firm mainly designed private residences, including a number of houses on Figure Eight Island. He also worked on public buildings, including the in-patient facility for the Lower Cape Fear Hospice and Life Care Center and a number of projects at North Carolina State University. Flynn won six design awards from the North Carolina chapter of the American Institute of Architects. In 1993, he received the Kamphoefner Prize from the N.C. Architecture Foundation. Malecha Papers contains drawings, concept sketches, models, correspondence, speeches, articles and papers, publications, personal notes, conference notes, presentation materials, photographs, and other materials related to Malecha's career in architecture, design teaching, and research. The bulk of the collection, comprised of faculty papers and architectural drawings and sketches, highlights Malecha's career as an educator and an architect. These papers document Malecha's tenure as a faculty member and Dean of the School of Design (later the College of Design) at North Carolina State University. Additional materials cover Malecha's position as President of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), as well as his involvement with various architectural associations such as the European Association of Architectural Education (EAAE), the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA), and the European Network of Heads of Schools of Architecture (ENHSA). The Drawings and Models and the Project Files contained in the collection further demonstrate Malecha's career as a practicing architect. The materials range in date from 1966 to 2015. Marvin J. Malecha (1949-2020), former dean of North Carolina State University’s College of Design and professor of architecture, has had a multi-faceted career encompassing administration, education, research, professional service, authorship, and practice as an architect. Malecha served as Dean of the College of Environmental Design at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona for more than a decade before taking over the position of dean at NC State University's School (later College) of Design in 1994. Throughout his career, he was involved in a number of professional associations and organizations related to architecture and architecture education. From 1989 to 1990, he was president of the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA). He is a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and was elected from 2008 to 2009 to serve as First Vice-President/President Elect of the AIA. In 2009, he was officially elected as President of the AIA. He regularly attended meetings, workshops, and conferences held by organizations such as the AIA, the European Association of Architectural Education (EAAE), the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA), and the European Network of Heads of Schools of Architecture (ENHSA). In December 31, 2015, Marvin Malecha retired as Dean of the College of Design to pursue the position of president and chief academic officer at the NewSchool of Architecture and Design in San Diego, California. Clippings from various newspapers and professional publications relate to lives and works of deans, faculty, and alumni of the School of Design. The majority of newspapers are local, including the News and Observer and the Raleigh Times, but national papers, such as the New York Times, are also included. Other clippings relate broadly to the Harrye B. Lyons Library, School of Design, and North Carolina State University including associated students and staff. Acquisition information, annual reports, project reports, policies, meetings notes, and reference files of the Harrye B. Lyons Library are included. Lyons Design Library supports the North Carolina State University, College of Design, orginally School of Design, and has collection emphases in architecture, landscape architecture, graphic design, industrial design, and art and design. The Design Library is located in Brooks Hall, now part of the College of Design. Brooks Hall was originally built to be the library on campus, D. H. Hill Jr. Library. The Design Library inhabits the space that was the original reading room of D. H. Hill Jr. Library. It was named for Mrs. Harrye B. Lyons, who headed the Design Library from 1947 to 1968. Less

The Patrick Rand Papers, 1974-2022, document Patrick Rand’s work, research, and teaching in the field of architectural design and technology. The collection contains drafts, notes, and manuscripts of architectural books authored or co-authored by Rand; course materials for classes and studios Rand taught at NC State University College of Design; conference materials, project documents, awards, and other documents related to Rand’s professional activities; and materials from masonry research projects, workshops, and conferences. The collection includes both physical materials and born-digital files. Patrick Rand is a Distinguished Professor of Architecture in the College of Design at NC State University. He joined the architecture faculty in 1977. His research focus is on the relationship between design and building technologies. Rand’s early research involved air-supported structures and other experimental construction strategies. He has since carried out funded research regarding innovation in masonry construction systems. His expertise now spans a full range of architectural construction materials and systems. Patrick Rand co-authored Materials for Design with Victoria Ballard Bell in 2006, and Materials for Design 2, with all new content, in 2014. Rand also co-authored with Edward Allen Architectural Detailing: Function, Constructibility, Aesthetics in 2007. He completed a substantially revised third edition of this book in 2016. Often reflective in nature, the papers reinforce Shogren's reputation as a professor who made his students think. This collection consists of student papers written for Professor Vernon F. Shogren. These papers were written primarily for his Conceptual Issues in Architecture and Vernon F. Shogren was born and raised in Cloquet, Minnesota. In 1950 he received a Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of Minnesota. He earned a Master of Architecture degree from the Massachussettes Institute of Technology in 1952. As a Fulbright Scholar during 1952-1953, he earned a certificate from the Technische Hogeschole, Delft, Netherlands. Afterwards Shogren returned to the United States and began teaching at the North Carolina State University School of Design. He left the school in 1955 but returned in 1961 to teach until his retirement in 1992. He distinguished himself as a challenging teacher who focused on conceptual issues. In 1964-65 and 1969-70, Shogren was named to the Academy of Outstanding Teachers, and from 1972-75 he held a Distinguished Alumni Professorship. Shogren's practice experience includes a number of years with Eero Saarinen and Associates in addition to projects such as the London and Oslo embassies and University of Chicago Law School.
