Material related to city planning in Raleigh, North Carolina, from 1972 to 1974, and class notes, photocopies of legal documents, city and state council minutes, meeting notes, maps and news clippings related to Eckels' political participation and efforts to prevent the Oberlin Project and the Pullen Road project from dissecting Pullen Park. Included is a photocopy of a legal document dated 1887 designating the donation of farm land from the Richard Stanhope Pullen estate to the City of Raleigh for use as a public park. Also in the collection are notes from the North Carolina State University Department of Electrical Engineering course, Principles of Electrical Engineering (EE 331) which Arthur Raymond Eckels taught in 1973. The James Fontaine Papers contain documents (mostly correspondence) related to the activity of James Fontaine. Also included is a certificate issued by the Order of Saint Patrick of North Carolina State College, according to which James Fontaine was dubbed "Knight of St. Patrick." The collection also includes a diploma certifying that James Fontaine was a member of the Mu Beta Psi Honorary Musical Fraternity at North Carolina State College (now North Carolina State University). James Spotswood Fontaine (1888-1943) was Associate Professor of Civil Engineering and Assistant Director of the Engineering Experiment Station at North Carolina State College (now University). He was educated at North Carolina State College and earned a Bachelor's of Engineering in Electrical Engineering in 1914. From 1915 through 1925, Fontaine worked for several companies and federal agencies including General Electric and the US Navy. From 1924 through 1925, Fontaine was in the graduate program in Civil and Highway Engineering and one of the first three graduate students to hold a research fellowship at North Carolina State College. In 1925-1930, he was the first and the only Research Assistant in the Engineering Experiment Station where he built and derived valuable results from the North Carolina Tire Tester; deduced valuable results from the operation of the North Carolina Road Test Truck and did much of the work which resulted in such bulletins as Highway Grades and Motor Vehicle Costs, of which he was co-author. From 1930 he advanced to the position of Assistant Professor of Mathematics, followed by Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering and Assistant Director of the Engineering Experiment Station. The records of the Electrical Engineering Wives' Club include a guest book, meeting minutes, correspondence, financial records, materials from club activities, photographs, and newspaper clippings reflecting a variety of club activities. North Carolina State University's Electrical Engineering Wives' Club was started early in 1958 as a social organization for wives of electrical engineering students. Members met to hear talks, play games, plan fundraisers and social events, and enjoy fellowship with other student and faculty wives. The University Archives Photograph Collection, College of Engineering Photographs, 1915-1993, mainly includes photographs of the faculty, staff, and students of various departments within the College of Engineering. A significant number of photographs documents research studies and laboratory work and equipment. Also included are photographs of award ceremonies, presentations and conferences, campus buildings, and promotional materials. Engineering classes have been taught since the first semester at North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (now North Carolina State University) in 1889. During the next few decades, specialized engineering curricula were developed, and the first engineering departments were formed. In 1923 these were all brought together under the School of Engineering. Subsequent development has resulted in additional departments, centers, and degree programs.
