The David W.W. Moore Collection on the Moses Rountree House collection (1970-2010) consists of four folders that originally in a binder organized by David W.W. Moore. The collection contains photos, newspaper clipppings, hand-written notes, and documents related to the Moses Rountree House. This collection documents the history of the Moses Rountree House which was built in 1869 by Oswald Lipscomb. Moses Rountree was one of the most prominent leaders of Wilson society in the nineteenth century. His activities helped to shape the economic, political, physical and the educational environment of the town of Wilson. Rountree was of English descent, and his ancestors came to Nansemond County, Virginia before 1700. Like many Virginians, the Rountree family began to acquire land over the border in North Carolina and by the early eighteenth century the family owned property on the banks of Contentnea Creek in what later became Wilson County. Moses Rountree was the son of Lewis Rountree and Elizabeth Daniel. He was born in 1822 on the family plantation several miles east of the present city of Wilson on what is now Route 264. Rountree was considered one of Wilson's leading nineteenth century merchants. He had several commercial ventures, including the establishment of a merchandise firm and his procurement of properties in Wilson. Less

The Louis Orr Intaglio Prints collection contains 51 intaglio prints of historical sites, landscapes, houses and plantations throughout North Carolina during the years between 1940 and 1949. While living in Paris, Louis Orr met North Carolinian Robert Lee Humber, who later persuaded him to create a series of etchings of North Carolina landmarks. In 1939, Orr returned from Paris and over the next twelve years he completed a series of plates of historical buildings and landscapes around North Carolina. Less

The Historic Architecture Research Project Records contain drawings and project files by students in the Department of Architecture, School of Design, at North Carolina State University. Included are measured drawings, photographs, negatives, field notes and sketches, historical information, and essays. The majority of the projects document historic buildings in North Carolina. Twenty-one other states and the District of Columbia are represented, as are Germany, Mexico, and Colombia. Other course-related materials include syllabi, correspondence, uncompleted projects, and a petition to eliminate the course requirement. The correspondence series includes correspondence of professors in the North Carolina State University Department of Architecture, including Cecil D. Elliott, Henry L. Kamphoefner, Vernon Shogren, and Lawrence Wodehouse, with North Carolina State University architecture students, various North Carolina clerks of court, Charles E. Peterson of the National Park Service, and George S. Koyl, Moira B. Mathieson, and Earl H. Reed of the American Institute of Architects. Between 1951 and 1969, many architecture students at North Carolina State University completed summer projects documenting historic buildings and districts. Beginning in 1959, these projects were submitted to the National Park Service's Historic American Buildings Survey. The project was formalized with the creation of the undergraduate course, "Historic Architecture Research" (ARC 300), which was required for admission to the fifth year architecture program. In 1964, students undertook a project to record the town of Beaufort in Carteret County, N.C. The collection contains documents on the residence at 106 John Street, Louisburg, North Carolina, designed by G. Milton Small and originally owned by the Wheless Family. It includes construction and architectural contracts, land deeds, invoices (for furnishings, landscaping, and contractors), and drawings (plot plans, floor plans, construction plans, property and subdivision surveys), and photographs of the Wheless residence. Also included is 1 CD that contains 118 survey photographs taken by Laura A. W. Phillips for the National Register of Historic Places. In 1954, Thomas and Lois Wheless contracted with architect G. Milton Small to design a residence for them in Louisburg, North Carolina. The house is one story and has three bedrooms and 2 1/2 baths.
