These models represent three buildings designed by architect George Matsumoto during the years 1955-1960 while he was still a professor of architecture at North Carolina State College (now North Carolina State University). These models were created for the exhibit "Simplicity, Order, and Discipline: The Work of George Matsumoto, FAIA" that was displayed at NC State University's Visual Arts Gallery (more recently known as the Gregg Museum), April 10 - June 28, 1997. The Brian Shawcroft Papers, 1958-2017, contain drawings and other materials documenting the professional activities of modernist architect Brian Shawcroft and associated architecture firms Holloway-Reeves; MacMillan, MacMillan, Shawcroft & Thames; Environmental Planning Associates; Shawcroft-Taylor; and McKimmon Edwards Shawcroft Associates. The collection is arranged into five series: drawings, professional files, photographic materials, project records, and slides. Drawings include original drawings, reproductions, and CAD printouts of process (or design) drawings and construction documents such as site plans, additions, alterations, and remodeling plans. Professional files include a list of completed projects, reproductions of photographs of projects, and supplemental materials to projects, Shawcroft’s curriculum vitae, and awards. Photographic materials include black-and-white and color prints and photographs of projects. Most photographs were taken by Shawcroft. Brian Shawcroft, born in England in 1929, is a modernist architect. Shawcroft studied architecture at the South West Essex Technical College and School of Art in London from 1949 to 1953. In 1960, he received a Masters in Architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Following this, he served as an associate professor and lecturer in architecture at the North Carolina State College's School of Design from 1960 to 1968. Shawcroft began practicing architecture professionally in 1954 and worked with various firms throughout his career. He is recognized for designing much of the modernist home inventory in the Research Triangle region from the 1970s to the late 1990s. In 1991 he was awarded the annual Henry Kamphoefner Prize by the American Institute of Architects-North Carolina Chapter for demonstrated excellence in the Modern Movement of architecture. The Charles Kahn Papers contains design proposals and drawings, course materials, journal articles, pamphlets, brochures, oral histories, and photographic negatives documenting work of Charles Kahn and his students as well as local architects, including Horacio Caminos, Matthew Nowicki, James Fitzgibbons, Eduardo Catalano, and George Matsumoto. Materials related to Buckminster Fuller and Charter Industries (Geodesic domes) are also included. Items in the collection are described using titles found on Kahn's original files. Charles Howard Kahn was born in Salisbury, North Carolina. In 1952, he joined the faculty at North Carolina State University as an instructor in Civil Engineering. He was appointed Associate Professor of Design in 1959. Kahn remained at North Carolina State University until 1968, when he left for the University of Kansas. Kahn's research focused on thin-shell structures and membranes of long-span roofs for buildings. Notably, he designed North Carolina State University's Carter-Finley Stadium. The items included in this collection reflect Kahn's time at North Carolina State University. Kahn passed away at the age of 95 in 2021. Less

The Charlotte Vestal Brown Wainwright Papers, 1767-1990, include correspondence, photographs, research notes, transcriptions, and blueprints. Material was gathered by Charlotte Vestal Brown Wainwright for her study of the practice of building in North Carolina between 1865 and 1945 and includes information on the administration of the grant project, photographs and manuscripts from the book written by Brown, as well as research and reference files used in the project. This collection comprises research files for the chapters that Wood contributed to the book Architects and Builders in North Carolina: A History of the Practice of Building, including correspondence, project notes, photographs and photograph permissions requests, interviews with architects (including audiotapes), newsclippings, and some architectural drawings. Also included are publications by Wood as well as research pertaining to other writing projects featuring architecture and design as a central theme. Ernest H. (Ernie) Wood III was an architectural writer for Southern Living and an editor for North Carolina Architect. He has also published articles in the AIA Journal and other periodicals. For the 1990 book Architects and Builders in North Carolina: A History of the Practice of Building (co-authored with with Catherine Bishir, Charlotte Vestal Brown, and Carl Lounsbury), he authored the final chapter, entitled "The Opportunities Are Unlimited: Architects and Builders since 1945." The F. Carter Williams Drawings and Files, 1928, 1940-1994, contain drawings and project files for many buildings designed by F. Carter Williams and his firm. Included are blueprints for the Mr. and Mrs. Guy H. Branaman residence in Raleigh, North Carolina, blueprints for the F. Carter Williams residence, as well as blueprints of other residential projects, churches, and schools. Also included are drawings and blueprints for projects at North Carolina universities, including Duke, North Carolina State, East Carolina, and Meredith. There are project files for many of the same buildings, as well as for several state buildings, including the North Carolina Legislative Building, and building at several parks. The Frank Harmon Papers, 1961-2019, document the professional activities of Harmon and his architectural firm. The collection is arranged into eight series: Project Files, Drawings, Photographs, Architectural Models, Office Files, Digital Media, Harwell Hamilton Harris Files, and Web Content. Project files include correspondence with clients. Architectural drawings include iterations of designs, as well as final construction documents. Photographs document the construction process. Article files concern Harmon’s publications. Models exist for a limited number of projects. Web content contains the official website of Harmon's firm and a Tumblr collecting sketches and other materials by Frank Harmon. Also included in the collection are architectural drawings by Harmon's close friend, architect Harwell Hamilton Harris, and files from Jean Murray Bangs Harris. Frank Harmon is a renowned modernist architect in Raleigh, North Carolina, and attended North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University) School of Design from 1959 to 1962. Later, he taught at his alma mater for more than 20 years. Born in Georgia in 1941, Harmon was raised in Greensboro, North Carolina. After attending NC State University, he went on to graduate from the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London, England, in 1967. He stayed in London for 11 years, beginning his first practice there. From 1979 to 1981, Harmon was a visiting professor at Auburn University’s School of Architecture and Fine Arts. In 1981, he established his own firm in Raleigh, North Carolina: Frank Harmon Architect. Since 1992, his firm has won more professional association design awards than any firm in North Carolina for both residential and commercial projects. In 1995, the firm was awarded the Kamphoefner Prize for innovative modern design over a ten- year period. Harmon became an American Institute of Architects (AIA) Fellow in 1988. The George Matsumoto Papers includes blueprints, specifications, sketches, correspondence, publications, scrapbooks, photographs, contracts, financial statements, and other related architectural records that document the extensive commercial and residential work of George Matsumoto and Associates. The bulk of the collection is composed of architectural records, such as drawings and sketches, that signify Matsumoto's architectural influences and his approach to project development over time. Included are materials that cover the various types of projects he took on, such as residential, collegiate, commercial, and community centers. The architectural records cover a wide expanse of projects primarily in North Carolina and California, with others in Virginia, Missouri, New York, Florida, Kentucky, Arkansas, and Illinois. The architectural records, publications, honors and awards, and architectural model contained in the collection portray Matsumoto's career as an architect, businessman, and leader of modernist architecture in the 20th century. The materials range from 1930 to 2009, with the bulk from 1940 to 1979. A project index to the collection is available online. George Matsumoto (1922-2016) was a Japanese American architect and educator who is most known for his award-winning, modernist designs. In 1948, Matsumoto became a faculty member at the School (later College) of Design of North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University). During his tenure at the School of Design, Matsumoto won more than thirty awards for his residential work, and his achievements in design were widely published. In 1961, George Matsumoto went on to join the faculty at the College of Environmental Design at the University of California, Berkeley, and opened his own firm. He stopped teaching in 1967 but continued his architecture work until 1991. In contrast to his residential work, Matsumoto's post-teaching work is mostly comprised of community centers and collegiate designs. Less

This collection contains architectural drawings and specifications, 1928-1977, documenting the works of William Henley Deitrick and his successor, Guy E. Crampton. Included are Deitrick's competition winning design for Needham Broughton High School (1928), his modernist Carolina County Club (1948), the prize winning Dorton Arena (with Matthew Nowicki, 1950 to 1951), and public housing pojects for the Raleigh Housing Authority. Crampton's designs include several buildings for Elon College (1965), the Wake Forest College Stadium (1966), numerous projects for the Wachovia Bank & Trust Co., and many public school buildings. The specifications are for buildings designed by Guy E. Crampton and Associates, including the Wake Forest College Stadium and public schools. William Henley Deitrick was born in Danville, Virginia, in 1895. He graduated from Wake Forest College in 1916. Then he worked as a high school principal for a year in Georgia. During World War I, Deitrick served as a second lieutenant in the United States Army . After the war, he worked as a building contractor from 1919 to 1922. He entered Columbia University, New York in 1922 and studied architecture there until 1924. In 1926 he began practicing architecture. During his professional career Deitrick earned many distinctions. He sold his firm to associate Guy E. Crampton upon his retirement in 1959. Guy Edwin Crampton, Jr., was born in Washington, D.C. on 19 September 1913. From 1934 to 1940 he was a draftsman in the Supervising Architect's Office of the Federal Works Agency. He graduated from George Washington University with a bachelor of architecture in 1939. Between 1940 and 1949 Crampton worked for several different architectural firms. In 1950 he became an associate of William Henley Deitrick and Associates. In 1959 the firm changed its name to Guy E. Crampton and Associates with Crampton as a general partner. Crampton retired in 1976. Less

The James Fitzgibbon Papers includes architect and North Carolina State University School of Design professor James Fitzgibbon’s architectural drawings for the Ralph Fadum House of Raleigh, North Carolina, the George W. Paschal House, also of Raleigh, the Mr. and Mrs. Robert W. Daniel House of Knoxville, Tennessee, and photographs and study models from his time working at Synergetics Inc. The collection includes color spot sketches of the exterior; site plans; working drawings; floor plans; shop drawings and blueprints and two undated drawings (1 sketch of interior elevation and 1 floor plan of 617 Kirby Street, Raleigh, North Carolina.); photographs by Joseph Molitor of the Fadum House; two models of the Globe Playhouse; photographs of study models and articles. James Walter Fitzgibbon (1915-1985) helped found the School of Design at North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University) in 1948. Fitzgibbon was hired as the associate architect for campus planning during the School of Design’s inception. He also served as a professor of architecture at North Carolina State College from 1948 to 1953. Fitzgibbon later served as president of Synergetics Inc., an association of Raleigh architects and engineers, before taking a position with Washington University in St. Louis. Fitzgibbon returned to the School of Design in 1967, serving for one year. Less

The collection contains the business and design records from James M. Webb's architectural firm, as well as his personal papers and some papers of his brother, John B. Webb, and his mother, Martha Webb. The major groupings of records are Project Files, Drawings, Maps, Professional Papers, Personal Papers, Photographs and Slides, Videos, Artifacts, John B. Webb, and Martha Webb. James Murray Webb was born in 1908 and died in 2000. In 1947, he joined the new City and Regional Planning School at the University of North Carolina (UNC) in Chapel Hill, where he served as a faculty member for thirty years. He and his brother, John Bruce Webb, maintained an architectural practice in Chapel Hill and designed a number of modernist houses and other buildings in the area. Less

The Les Thornbury Interviews of Early North Carolina State University College of Design Faculty and Alumni contains DVDs and videotapes with video oral history interviews of early NC State University College of Design faculty and students conducted during the 1990s. These interviews have been converted to digital files and are accessible to researchers in that format. Leslie Arden Thornbury is a filmmaker and an alumnus of the NC State University School of Forest Resources and School of Agriculture and Life Sciences. He was born on December 19, 1947, in Raleigh, N.C. He attended radio school in San Diego, California and served as a radioman in the Vietnam War in the late 1960s. After his military service, Thornbury completed his education, received a bachelor of conservation from North Carolina State University in 1974 and embarked on his career as a television producer. During the 1990s he worked on a proposed video documentary of the history of the College of Design which included these video oral history interviews with early faculty and students. Less

The North Carolina Buildings Collection includes drawings, specifications, construction contracts, and correspondence relating to individual buildings in North Carolina. Unbuilt projects are included. The finding aid contains a description for each project, including the name of the architect(s), a brief description of the project, and an inventory of documents. Projects are arranged by type of building. The late 19th century saw radical changes in building practices in North Carolina, brought about by the rise of professional architects and contractors, increased industrialization, and the standardization of building components. Population booms between 1900 and 1940 precipitated increased construction, and suburbs emerged where major cities doubled or tripled their populations during this period. Increasingly, professional architects were responsible for the design of housing, as well as commercial, industrial and civic buildings. In 1905, North Carolina became one of the earliest states to enact a uniform building code. The North Carolina Architectural Association (NCAA) was formed by a group of Charlotte architects in 1909. Their aims were ultimately to form a North Carolina Chapter of The American Institute of Architects (AIA) and to promote the passage of an architectural Practice Act Bill in the General Assembly. The North Carolina Chapter of AIA, chartered in 1913, regulated fees to eliminate unfair competition and provided a code of ethics for professional standards. The Practice Act Bill, ratified in 1915, provided for the examination and licensing of architects. A similar "Act to Regulate the Practice of General Contracting," passed in 1925, regulated the construction industry. Regulation of architectural and building industries led to increased uniformity in working drawings and specifications for buildings, as national industry standards for drafting and construction were followed. Still largely rural and conservative following World War II, North Carolina nevertheless made rapid economic and architectural progress. The 1950s found the state on the cutting edge of architectural development, as the internationally renowned faculty of the School of Design at North Carolina State College vigorously promoted modernism as the only "correct" style. Modernism was embraced for governmental and institutional buildings, while housing remained, for the most part, rooted in traditional forms. Less

The Roger H. Clark Papers, 1950-2013, contains correspondence; course material from North Carolina State University and University of Virginia; American Institute of Architects committee files; research notes and materials relating to Clark's books Kinetic Architecture, Precedents in Architecture and School of Design' published reports; project files, which include reduced plans, skecthes and photographs of architecture models; and architectural drawings of residences, office buildings, academic buildings, churches, banks and other buildings, mostly in central North Carolina. Roger H. Clark (1939- ) is a practicing architect and ACSA Distiguished Professor of Architecture at North Carolina State University. Clark received a B.S. in architecture in 1963 from the University of Cincinnati and a M.Arch. in 1964 from the University of Washington. Clark taught at the University of Virginia from 1964 to 1969, and at North Carolina State University beginning in 1969. His publications include Kinetic Architecture and Precedents in Architecture. Clark practiced architecture individually and with several firms in the Raleigh-Durham area including John D. Latimer and Associates, Inc., O'Brien/Atkins Associates, PA, and Cannon Architects. Clark has chaired the Committee on Design for the American Institute of Architects, both for the national organization and the North Carolina Chapter. He has also chaired the AIANC Awards Committee. Jaroslav Jan "J.J." Kabatnik was born May 28, 1907, in Bohemia, the westernmost region in the present-day Czech Republic. During his early life, Kabatnik studied Engineering and Architecture at the University of Prague and married Jarmila "Mila" Cihak. In 1936, he represented Bohemia in Summer Olympic Games (Hitler's Games). When Communists took over his home country, Kabatnik and his wife escaped from the country and became refugees in a camp in Germany. In 1948, he was listed as a refugee passenger of a ship to Casablanca, Morocco. In 1953, Kabatnik and his wife arrived in Greensboro, NC, USA. In Greensboro, the talented architect was known as "the refugee Czech Olympian." He started his career in architecture in the United States in 1954. three years later, he started working with the famous Ed Lowenstein who exclusively partnered with the famous builder Eugene Gulledge, the founder of "Superior Construction Company." In 1958, Kabatnik left Lowenstein firm and joined Superior Construction Company as an architect. He continued his partnership with Eugene Gulledge until 1976. Kabatnik died in 1995 in Greensboro.
