The Alexander Isley Papers, 1967-2020, contains materials related to Alexander Isley’s childhood, schooling, and career as a graphic designer at M&Co., Spy magazine, and Alexander Isley, Inc. These materials include design sketches and drafts, final design samples, financial records, correspondence, press clippings, school records and coursework, memorabilia, and a website. Alexander Isley (1961- ) is a graphic designer from Durham, North Carolina, who, as of 2019, is creative director of Alexander Isley, Inc. He holds a degree in Environmental Design from the School of Design at North Carolina State University and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from The Cooper Union in New York City. From 1984 to 1986 he was the senior designer at the New York City design firm M&Co., then in 1987 became the first full-time art director of Spy, the New York-based satirical monthly magazine. He left Spy in 1988 to start his own design firm, Alexander Isley Inc. Isley has received several design awards, including the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) Medal in 2014. His work can be found in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Smithsonian Institution, and the Library of Congress. Less

The Charles M. Ellertson Research and Study Collection on Typography contains books, serials (including a run of The Association of American University Presses Book and Jacket Show), booklets and leaflets on graphic design, typography, fonts, and graphic designers, and some papers related to Ellertson's work in typography. The collection also includes a set of Merganthaler Linotype negatives from Ellertson's early career. Materials range in date from 1956 to 2022. Charles M. Ellertson (1945-2022), a typographer and typesetter, co-founded Tseng Information Systems in Durham, NC in 1980 and was vice-president of the firm until its closure in 2021, setting type for university presses throughout the U.S. Using Fontographer and later FontLab, Charles created special characters and diacritics for non-Romanized languages; his work enabled the publication of Native American research and literature. Charles was married to Barbara Williams, founder of BW&A Books, Inc., a local book design and production studio. Less

The Doris Elizabeth King Paperback Book Collection contains a selection of books made from a large collection of books bequeathed to North Carolina State University. Items in the collection were selected by NC State University Graphic Design & Industrial Design faculty members Deborah Littlejohn and Russell Flinchum, as well as the staff of the NC State University Libraries' Special Collections Research Center. Items selected are either early paperback books or otherwise noteworthy for their book design. A separate collection contains Doris Elizabeth King's archival papers. Less

This collection contains publications authored, edited and/or designed by H. Th. Wijdeveld and that had been collected by Jim Brandt when he was a student at the NC State College School of Design and Wijdeveld was a visiting lecturer. Also included are photographs of Wijdeveld, work Brandt did in Wijdeveld's classes, and newsclippings. Hendricus Theodore Wijdeveld (1885-1987) was a Dutch architect, editor, graphic designer. typographer, and book designer. In addition, he was known for his designs for theater sets, costumes, and furniture. He edited the groundbreaking design-oriented magazine Wendingen, published 1918-1931. During the 1949-1950 academic year, he was a visiting professor at NC State College's School of Design, and Jim Brandt was one of his students. The Martha Scotford Research and Study Collection on Graphic Design contains materials from 1896 through 2010 including design works and ephemera, publications, files documenting Scotford’s projects, and design-related reference materials relating to graphic design, book design and typography. Martha Scotford was a professor of graphic design in the College of Design at North Carolina State University until 2013; she began as a visiting lecturer in Visual Design in 1981. She was raised in New York, New Hampshire, and Vermont, and received a Bachelor of Arts in Art History from Oberlin College in 1966 and both her Bachelor and Master of Fine Arts degrees in Graphic Design from Yale University in 1970. She has published numerous books related to design. In 2001, she spent five months in India as a Fulbright lecturer. In 2007 she received NC State University's Distance Education and Learning Technologies Gertrude Cox Special Merit Award. Martha Scotford donated this collection to the University to be used as a research and study collection for design and the history of design.
