The Dan Sears Collection of Landscape Architecture and Greenways Projects, 1963-1999, documents the professional activities of landscape architect Dan Sears. The collection consists of proposals, project manuals, designs, development plans, and landscape architectural drawings created by Dan Sears and partnering architectural firms. Sears' projects include private residences, municipal buildings, public parks, and campuses. Sears Design Group was founded by Dan C.L. Sears, ASLA, in 1979. Over the years the firm has worked on projects largely in North Carolina but also in Georgia, Virginia, and even Wyoming. Sears Design Group has developed successful streetscapes for downtown areas as well as landscapes for private residences. In collaboration with Fitch Creations, Sears Design Group has provided landscape design and land use planning for the village of Fearrington in Chatham County, North Carolina. Dan C.L. Sears received the 2009 North Carolina Award from the North Carolina American Society of Landscape Architects at its meeting in 2009. Sears also worked with landscape architect Richard C. The Geoffrey Duart McLean Landscape Architecture Photographs and Drawings includes digital files that are scans of original drawings, photographic prints, and slides. The scans were done in 2012; the original photographs date from 1963-circa 1990. These images show McLean's projects on the North Carolina State University campus and Raleigh's Eastgate Park. McLean's work for landscape architect Lewis Clarke and architect A. G. Odell is also included. Additional unprocessed materials (drawings, slides, etc.) have also been added that document McLean's landscape architecture projects. Geoffrey McLean graduated from the North Carolina State University School of Design in 1969 with a degree in landscape architecture. He studied under noted landscape architect Lewis Clarke. His firm, Geoffrey McLean & Company, commenced business in 1971. In addition to being a licensed landscape architect, McLean is also a professional engineer. He has been a member of the Wake County Planning Board and Board of Supervisors for the Wake County Soil and Water Conservation District. The Kofi Boone Papers contains architectural drawings, studies, correspondence, files, and media clippings for projects that span Boone's student and professional careers. Boone's documented projects include: master plans completed during graduate school at the University of Michigan; urban design guidelines, planning analyses and public park designs completed at the multidisciplinary firm JJR Inc.; and participatory designs and place-based storytelling efforts completed out of the NC State Department of Landscape Architecture. Most graduate school and JJR projects are located in the Detroit area, and most NC State projects are located in North Carolina. The collection also includes web content: The Cultural Landscape Foundation blog, The Landscape Architecture Podcast, and a website featuring Kofi Boone's "Black Landscapes Matter" article. Kofi Boone is an African American landscape architect and a professor in the NC State University Department of Landscape Architecture within the College of Design. Boone joined the Department of Landscape Architecture faculty in 2004. Through scholarship, teaching and extension service, Boone works in the landscape context of environmental justice and explores the use of new media as a means of increasing community input in design and planning processes. The MacMillan and MacMillan Architectural Papers, 1919, 1950-2010, document the professional activities of Dan and Frank MacMillan and their architectural firm. The collection consists of architectural drawings with various iterations of designs, blueprints, construction documents, prospective elevations, technical drawings, and related materials. MacMillan and MacMillan’s projects include mostly private residences, with a small number of subdivision developments. Also included in the collection are drawings of landscape architecture projects by Richard C. Bell, done in collaboration with MacMillan and MacMillan projects. There is also a series of photographs from the period (1950-1952) in which the Dorton Arena was under construction; Dan MacMillan worked on the Dorton Arena as a project engineer for Muirhead Construction. Dan (1921- ) and Frank (d. 1991) MacMillan were born in Fayetteville, North Carolina and were principals in the MacMillan and MacMillan architectural firm. Dan MacMillan graduated from North Carolina State University in 1948 and worked for several years with the architect Jim Webb and then as a project engineer for Muirhead Construction on Raleigh’s Dorton Arena. In 1952 Dan MacMillan founded his firm, Dan MacMillan Architect and Associates in Fayetteville. After his brother, Frank, received his architecture license in the early 1950s Dan partnered with him and the firm was renamed MacMillan and MacMillan. Frank MacMillan died in 1991. Tillson Landscape Architecture Papers contains drawings, sketches, specifications, correspondence, notes, plant guides, and other materials that document the landscape design work of Tillson from the 1920s to the 1970s. The collection also contains an oral history interview of his son, David Tillson, in 2016. These materials encompass Tillson's work as a landscape architect, creating designs for small-scale residential locations, large-scale private subdivision, public parks, public housing projects, schools, churches, and hospitals. The collection represents Tillson's work throughout the southeastern United States, with the majority of the projects based in North Carolina's Piedmont Triad region. The earlier materials from 1906 to 1928 demonstrate Tillson's beginnings in landscape architecture while gaining knowledge and experience in the field. The bulk of the collection covers Tillson's career as a practicing landscape architect between 1928 and 1969. The collection ranges from 1906 to 2016. Reginald D. Tillson was a landscape architect in High Point, North Carolina, who designed significant improvements to the built environment of High Point and other communities of the Piedmont Triad area. His early career focused on residential design work for the wealthy and upper-middle-class residents of High Point, which at the time was a prosperous center of the textile and furniture industries. In the 1950s and following decades, as North Carolina's population grew and planning and development trends evolved, Tillson's work grew in scale and complexity. He designed dozens of subdivisions and grounds for schools, churches, and hospitals. The collection includes documents from the entire range of his career until 2003, including papers documenting his landscape architectural work, drawings, and personal correspondence. Many of his projects include both residential and commercial landscape architectural work in North Carolina, Hawaii, Iran, and Washington D.C., and this collection also contains administrative paperwork from his firms and universities.
