MoreThe Alan Sykes Collection of NC State Athletics Publications and Memorabilia (1930-2013) contains publications from the NCSU Basketball and Football teams, NCSU memorabilia, newspapers, Agromecks, alumni magazines, and scrapbooks. The memorabilia consists of foam fingers, cups and bottles, flags, stickers, photos, and more. These materials were collected by Alan Sykes, an NC State Wolfpack fan. Athletics began officially at the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts on March 12, 1892 when a football team made up of students at the college defeated the Raleigh Male Academy, a local high school, by the score 12-6. That fall, the faculty and trustees of the college first became involved with intercollegiate athletics. Since 1947 athletic teams at North Carolina State have been known as the Wolfpack. The University has been a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference since it was formed in 1953.

Henry Leveke Kamphoefner was dean of the North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University) School of Design, 1948-1973, and continued to teach architecture at North Carolina State Universtiy until 1979. Kamphoefner practiced architecture in Sioux City, Iowa, 1932-1936; was associate architect for the Rural Resettlement Administration in Washington, D.C., 1936-1937; and taught architecture at the University of Oklahoma, 1937-1948.

The medallion appears to be bronze, and it measures roughly 1 inch by 1.5 inches. It was cast by Whitehead and Hoag of Newark, New Jersey (faintly indicated on the back). The front has the college seal and this text: "25th Anniversary, 1889 1914." The medal was found during the 1970s or 1980s in Pullen Park (near the university's Bagwell Hall) in Raleigh, North Carolina. The North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (the original name for North Carolina State University) commemorated its twenty-fifth anniversary on 1-3 Oct. 1914. In addition to the actual anniversary excercises, the celebrations also included alumni reunions, dinners, dances, receptions, a military drill, and a football game.

The collection contains patent information, drawings, trademarks, pictures, sketches, videos, correspondence, and personal memorabilia from World War II. The collection spans the early 1940s to 2002. Samuel S. Scherr (1923-2002), industrial and product designer, was president of Scherr & McDermott, a design firm working in the fields of industrial, environmental, and graphic design. In 1955 as CEO and President of Scherr & McDermott, collaborating with the International Cooperation Administration, Scherr helped establish the Korean Small Scale Industry & Handicraft Design Center in South Korea. In 1977, Samuel Scherr became the President of the American Crafts Council, a position he held for two years. Scherr continued his design and marketing work with Samuel Scherr & Partners, Fulton + Partners, and as an individual consultant.

Ohio native Willard Harrison Bennett (1903 - 1987) was the Burlington Professor of Physics at North Carolina State University from 1961 to 1976. He researched in the areas of plasma physics, astrophysics, geophysics, surface physics, and physical chemistry. Bennett held nearly 70 United States and foreign patents, including the radio frequency mass spectrometer, which he invented in 1955.
