Material related to city planning in Raleigh, North Carolina, from 1972 to 1974, and class notes, photocopies of legal documents, city and state council minutes, meeting notes, maps and news clippings related to Eckels' political participation and efforts to prevent the Oberlin Project and the Pullen Road project from dissecting Pullen Park. Included is a photocopy of a legal document dated 1887 designating the donation of farm land from the Richard Stanhope Pullen estate to the City of Raleigh for use as a public park. Also in the collection are notes from the North Carolina State University Department of Electrical Engineering course, Principles of Electrical Engineering (EE 331) which Arthur Raymond Eckels taught in 1973. Arthur Raymond Eckels was a faculty member of the North Carolina State University Electrical Engineering Department from 1949 to 1983 and a community activist who campaigned to preserve Raleigh, North Carolina's Pullen Park. The Charles McGee Heck Papers document Heck's life and work prior to and during his tenure as Professor and Head of the Physics Department at North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University), 1917 - 1946. The collection consists of bulletins, letters, a proposal, a testimonial, typescripts, a display album, and lantern slide plates. Charles McGee Heck (1881-1952) joined the Electrical Engineering Department at North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University) in 1913 to teach physics. He became Professor and Head of the Physics Department in 1917 and remained so until his retirement in 1946. Less

The James Marion Williamson North Carolina State Memory Book contains a photo album assembled by James Marion Williamson. It contains photographs of family members and friends in various settings such as Lassiter Mill Lake, Pilot Mountain, and a cemetery. It also contains photos of buildings, football games, and people socializing at State College (now NC State University) during Williamson's time as a student. There are also some photos of downtown Raleigh. Most photos are unidentified. Materials date from 1924 to 1925, with one photo dating to 1929. James Marion Williamson was born in Raeford, NC in 1904. He graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering from State College (now NC State University) in 1927. He met his wife Ethel Hall there. He went on to work for Duriron Co. in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he retired as CEO. Williamson passed away in Lakewood, California in 1978. Less

The Mary Yarbrough Papers (1825-2012) contains a variety of materials including correspondence, photographs, publications, music books, news clippings, photocopies, and artifacts, most of which document Yarbrough's life and career, as well as her family history. Mary Elizabeth Yarbrough (1904-1984) was one of the first women to receive a graduate degree (M.S. in chemistry, 1927) from North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University). Mary Yarbrough served on the faculty of Meredith College for many years (1929-1972). In 1941 she received a Ph.D. and Phi Beta Kappa key at Duke University. At Meredith College she headed the chemistry and physics department, and she became an assistant director of the cooperative education program. Less

This collection contains copies of speeches, talks and papers related to Nash Nicks Winstead's work as a professor and administrator at North Carolina State University from 1953 to 1990. There are as well materials pertaining to his work with the Ellis L. Phillips Foundation, his work for the Institute of Biological Sciences at North Carolina State University, and his service in the United States Citizen-Ambassador Program. Included are printed copies of Winstead's personal writings: histories of both North Carolina State University from 1953 to 1995 and the North Carolina State University Provost's Office from 1955 to 1993; genealogical writings about his ancestors and hometown of Leasburg, North Carolina, which contains information dating from 1800 to 1960; and a volume documenting the Winstead family pets. Also found are Winstead's personal and professional correspondence from 1959 to 1994. Nash Nicks Winstead (1925-) held a number of academic and administrative positions at North Carolina State University between 1953 and 1990. He began his career at North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University) as a professor of plant pathology, and moved on to become assistant provost, vice provost, vice chancellor, and interim chancellor. As an administrator he played a large role in facilitating affirmative action measures, and was particularly involved in the integration of African American students into academic and social programs at North Carolina State University. The Raleigh Newsweekly Newspaper contains Raleigh Newsweekly newspapers from June 1979 to February 1980. The newspapers include editorials, local news summaries, feature articles, sports, local events, and advertisements. The first issue of the Raleigh Newsweekly was published in June of 1979. According to this issue, it was determined through a feasibility study and interviews that there was a need for a local weekly paper in the Raleigh area. The paper, dubbed "The Publication of Understanding," was free and funded by advertisers, at least at the time of its founding. It covered social issues, legislative matters, and local entertainment, among other items. It is unclear when the Raleigh Newsweekly ceased publication. Less

The Ralph W. Cummings Papers document the personal and professional life of Ralph W. Cummings. The primary focus of the collection is Cummings' career as a professor, researcher and administrator working at North Carolina State University and with international organizations in the fields of soil science and agronomy. The collection also contains the personal papers and letters of Ralph Cummings and the Cummings family papers which include a number of land deeds and legal documents dating from 1840 until 2001 as well as the personal papers of extended family members. Ralph W. Cummings (1911-2001) was born in Reidsville, North Carolina. He was the head of the Department of Agronomy at North Carolina State University from 1942 until 1947. He held a number of administrative positions for the University over the scope of his career, as well as working in research and leadership positions for a number of national and international organizations concerned with world agriculture and agricultural education and research.
