The North Carolina State University Genetics Department Film Collection, 1960s-2000s, includes five 16mm films. They range in length from 15 to 30 minutes long. Two are labeled as being in color and it is likely that the other three are in color as well. The film, "Yeast" included in this collection may be in Japanese. The films are educational and all relate to biological genetics. No formally organized genetics department existed at North Carolina State University until 1951. Until that time, the subject of genetics was distributed to several long-established departments within the School of Agriculture. By the 1930s, departments such as Agronomy, Zoology, and Plant Pathology (among others) were beginning to take an interest in genetics and the possible ways in which it could be integrated into their coursework and research projects. In 1951, the University decided to create a department devoted entirely to genetics for graduate degrees and more basic research. In 2013, the programs of the Department of Genetics were subsumed under the new Department of Biological Sciences in the new College of Sciences. Less

This collection contains the digital files of the interim department head from the first year of existence of the Dept. of Biological Sciences. The collection also includes a departmental commencement brochure. Materials range in date from 2013 to 2019. The Department of Biological Sciences was established on 1 July 2013 as part of NC State’s new, comprehensive College of Sciences. The department brought together programs that already existed in biology, microbiology, genetics and toxicology. The Stanley George Stephens Papers, 1941-1984, contain papers, publication list, journal articles, and reprints and one book. Stanley George Stephens (1911-1986), known as "Steve," joined the faculty of North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University) in 1949, serving first as a professor of agronomy, then as head of the Faculty of Genetics from 1951 to 1957. In 1967 he became the first NC State faculty member elected to the National Academy of Sciences. He retired in 1974 as a professor emeritus after 25 years at the university. Less
