The Douglas Dickerson Papers contain personal information about Dickerson, such as his time at North Carolina State; his military service during World War II and awards, including the French Legion of Honor; his family; reproductions of photographs; and a DVD “Video Tribute to Doug Dickerson,” and two badges. Also included is information about the 82nd Airborne Division and photocopies of materials about various military battles and maps. Several posters contain composite photographs and materials documenting the 82nd Airborne Division and Dickerson’s military achievements. Douglas Dickerson (1920- ) attended North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University) from 1939 to 1942. During World War II Dickerson served in the 82nd Airborne Division, which was involved in D-Day and the Battle of the Bulge. The John D. Mattox Papers contain photographic prints, negatives, and contact sheets, and papers depicting the personal and professional life of John D. Mattox. Personal portraits and snapshots document the lives of Mattox, his wife Mary, their son Douglas, and their extended family. Also included are photographs of the town of Wendell, North Carolina, where the Mattox family lived. The collection also includes photographs taken while Mattox served in Europe during World War II. Relating to Mattox’s professional career as a photographer at North Carolina State University, there are many images of campus scenes, student and faculty portraits, and campus publications featuring Mattox’s work. Wedding photographs, miscellaneous portraits, unidentified original and copied tintypes and cartes de visite, as well as rolled 35 mm negatives are also included. While the majority of the collection is composed of photographs, there are some papers such as news clippings, correspondence, business cards, awards, brochures, and grade reports which belonged to Mattox. John Douglas Mattox, Sr. (1911-1987) was a photographer with the Visual Aids Department at North Carolina State University from 1949 to 1974. A native of Wendell, North Carolina, Mattox attended North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University) in the 1930s and enlisted in the Army in 1941, serving in Europe. He married the former Mary Elizabeth Davis of Columbia, South Carolina, and had a son John Douglas Mattox, Jr., called Doug. The records of John William Harrelson's administration in the Office of the Chancellor at North Carolina State College (later, University) include correspondence, financial records, and other general administrative paperwork. Topics include the consolidation of the University of North Carolina, post-World War II veteran enrollment, the design and and construction of the nuclear reactor on NC State's campus, and other general history of the campus during the time period of these records, 1933-1953. John William Harrelson was selected to head North Carolina State College in 1934 under the new title of Dean of Administration. His title changed to Chancellor in 1945, and he served that position until 1953. During his leadership, Harrelson participated in the consolidation of North Carolina's institutions of higher education. With the advent of World War II, military training played an expanding role at NC State. After 1945, the College saw expanded growth with the establishment of the School of Design and the School of Forestry, as well as the construction of a nuclear reactor.
