The Leslie N. Boney Architectural Papers document the work of Wilmington, North Carolina, architects Leslie N. Boney Sr., and Leslie N. Boney Jr. from projects done in conjunction with architect James F. Gause in the 1920s through projects of Boney Architects, Inc., in the 1980s. Educational institution plans make up a significant portion of the project files in this collection, representing schools from the elementary through university levels. The firm's architectural projects also include churches, banks, residences, offices, libraries, and retail establishments. The vast majority of these buildings are located in North Carolina, especially in the eastern part of the state, though a small number of South Carolina projects are included as well. These project files include correspondence, inspection reports, drawings, blueprints, project specifications, photographs, contracts, and bid data and forms. Personal papers of Leslie N. Boney Sr., make up a small part of this collection, and include copies of textiles, chemistry, and English exams dating from 1901 to 1903, belonging to Leslie N. Boney Sr., C. L. Creech, and O. Max Gardner. A copy of Boney Sr.'s account of the 1901 fire that destroyed NC State University's original Watauga Hall, as printed in the 1903 Agromeck, is also included. North Carolina native Leslie N. Boney Sr. (1880-1964) graduated from the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University) in 1903 with a degree in textile engineering. Boney joined Wilmington architect James F. Gause as a partner in practice in 1918, then took over the practice in 1922, upon Gause's retirement. Boney's eldest son, Leslie N. Boney Jr. (1920-2003), joined his father's practice after graduating from the College of Engineering at North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University) in 1940 with a Bachelor of Science in Architectural Engineering. Boney Jr. served in the Army Corps of Engineers during World War II, earning the rank of major, and returned to his family's architectural practice following the war. Boney Jr. was a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects, served as president of North Carolina's chapter of the American Institute of Architects, and was a recipient of North Carolina State University's prestigious Watauga Medal in 1996. In the letter, postmarked from Boomer (Wilkes County), North Carolina, Mrs. Teague described events happening at home, and asked Midge to write back when she had the chance. Mrs. Teague sent the letter to Presbyterian Hospital, located in Charlotte, North Carolina. North Carolina native Mildred Midge Teague (1924 - 1988) worked at Presbyterian Hosptial in Charlotte, North Carolina, at the time her mother wrote this letter to her. She later married W. This collection contains copies of speeches, talks and papers related to Nash Nicks Winstead's work as a professor and administrator at North Carolina State University from 1953 to 1990. There are as well materials pertaining to his work with the Ellis L. Phillips Foundation, his work for the Institute of Biological Sciences at North Carolina State University, and his service in the United States Citizen-Ambassador Program. Included are printed copies of Winstead's personal writings: histories of both North Carolina State University from 1953 to 1995 and the North Carolina State University Provost's Office from 1955 to 1993; genealogical writings about his ancestors and hometown of Leasburg, North Carolina, which contains information dating from 1800 to 1960; and a volume documenting the Winstead family pets. Also found are Winstead's personal and professional correspondence from 1959 to 1994. Nash Nicks Winstead (1925-) held a number of academic and administrative positions at North Carolina State University between 1953 and 1990. He began his career at North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University) as a professor of plant pathology, and moved on to become assistant provost, vice provost, vice chancellor, and interim chancellor. As an administrator he played a large role in facilitating affirmative action measures, and was particularly involved in the integration of African American students into academic and social programs at North Carolina State University. The North Carolina Farm Bureau Federation, North Carolina Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Company, North Carolina Farm Bureau Service Company, and North Carolina Farm Bureau Marketing Association are all represented in the documents of this collection. Also, a substantial amount of material testifies to the activities of the North Carolina Farm Bureau Women's Committee. Formats include correspondence, corporate documents, publications, financial ledgers, legal documents and transcripts, scrapbooks, photographs, film reels, audio recordings, and miscellaneous artifacts. Organized in 1936 as a chapter of the American Farm Bureau, the North Carolina Farm Bureau was created to be a grassroots organization that would give farmers a unified voice on agricultural issues. Its Women's Committee was established in 1942. In 1953, the North Carolina Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Company was established. Beginning in 1962, the North Carolina Farm Bureau pioneered creation of a group purchase program that was managed by the North Carolina Farm Bureau Service Company. The following year, the North Carolina Farm Bureau further expanded with the establishment of the North Carolina Farm Bureau Marketing Association. Because of the organization's involvement in legal and legislative matters, a Legal Foundation for the North Carolina Farm Bureau was created in 1983. In 1987, a Political Action Committee was also added. Educational programs of the Farm Bureau include the R. Flake Shaw Memorial Scholarship Fund, the Institute for Future Agricultural Leaders, and "Agriculture in the Classroom." Less

North Carolina State University, Athletics, Associate Director of Athletics Records contains the files of J. Franklin (Frank) Weedon. Weedon served in various positions during his tenure at North Carolina State University, including Publicity Director (1960-1961), Director of Sports Information (1961-1971), Assistant Director of Athletics and Sports Information (1971-1976), and Associate Director of Athletics (1976-1997). These records contain information about the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Service Bureau; departmental administration relating to Carter Stadium, student athlete letter winners, sports newsletters, and Weedon’s correspondence; individual sports; and the Wolfpack Sports Network. Athletics began officially at the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts on March 2, 1892 at what is today Raleigh's Pullen Park, when a football team made up of students at the college defeated the Raleigh Male Academy, a local high school, by the score 12-6. That fall, the team scrimmaged for the first time against the second teams of area colleges. After losing to the University of North Carolina and Wake Forest, the football team decided that they lacked the funds necessary to compete on an equal level with other colleges and universities. Therefore, they petitioned the college Board of Trustees for fifty dollars to finance travel and team equipment. With this request, the faculty and trustees of the college first became involved with intercollegiate athletics. Since 1947 athletic teams at North Carolina State have been known as the Wolfpack. The University has been a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference since it was formed in 1953.J. The Polk Family Papers, 1850-1961, contain correspondence, newspaper articles, recipes, printed booklets, typed manuscripts, and a nineteenth-century memory book relating to the personal life and professional activities of Leonidas Lafayette Polk and members and friends of his family. Included are a small number of documents concerning Polk's daughter Juanita Polk Denmark and the Turrentine family of Hillsborough, North Carolina. Polk family of North Carolina includes Leonidas Lafayette Polk (1837-1892), who was a North Carolina government official, Civil War veteran, politician, farmer, businessman, and journalist. Throughout his career, Polk supported and led campaigns on behalf of educational institutions and agricultural development. He organized the state's farmers to lobby for a state agricultural college; joined with the Watauga Club, they successfully established the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University) in 1887. The Ralph Waldo Green papers include materials documenting Green's education at Cornell University, his career as an editor in the North Carolina Agricultural Extension Service, his experience as an agricultural-cooperative organizer, his tenure at North Carolina State College, and his avocation of ornithology and conservation. The papers include professional and personal writings by both him and his wife, Charlotte Hilton Green. The collection also contains correspondence, clippings, memorabilia, photographs and a scrapbook. Ralph Waldo Green (1885-1946) taught economics at North Carolina State College in Raleigh, North Carolina, from 1925 until 1946. Green also worked as an agricultural editor for the North Carolina Agricultural Extension Service. Green received a B.S. from Cornell University in 1914 and an M.S. in Sociology from North Carolina State College in 1925. For a brief time, he was connected with Tri-State Tobacco Cooperative as editor and organizer and during World War I, he served in the Quartermaster Corps of the United States Army. Less

The Reinard Harkema papers contain student recommendations, student photos, professional correspondence, and other professional papers associated with Harkema's tenure as professor of zoology at North Carolina State University, 1936 to 1978. Letters make up the bulk of the written collection, with notable correspondence between Harkema and David A. Becker, Alva Harris, Reginald D. Manwell, and Sturgis McKeever. Other material includes handbooks, programs, and proceedings from various North Carolina Academy of Science events and meetings; and a photograph album with pictures of Harkema's comparative anatomy classes between 1966 and 1975. Reinard Harkema (1910-1978) received his A.B. from Calvin College and his Ph.D. in 1935 from Duke University. Harkema taught at North Carolina State University from 1936 to 1978 as professor of zoology with a specialization in parasitology of wild animals. In addition to classroom teaching, he headed the pre-dental and pre-medical program in the Department of Zoology. During World War II he served in the United States Medical Corps as a parasitologist, and was a consultant to the Air Force following the war. In 1956, Dr. Harkema was elected president of the North Carolina Academy of Sciences, and in 1969 he received the NC State University Alumni Distinguished Teaching Professor Award. Less

Davis Papers includes correspondence, high school summer workshop and North Carolina State University course materials, and a large series of article reprints that relate to the processing of glass and ceramics. The material dates from 1932 to 1992, and bulks in the two decades of his career as educator and researcher. Topics include his academic life and materials science engineering research and education. News clippings, radio talks, articles, correspondence, field reports, and photographs relating to Robert Walter Graeber's thirty-two years spent in service of the North Carolina Agricultural Extension program. As head of the Forestry Extension, he influenced the founding of the North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University) Forestry Department in 1929. Of major interest in this collection are Graeber's weekly field reports on several counties in North Carolina. These reports reflect Graeber's daily activities from 1926 to 1939. Other reports meticulously document plots of timber within several counties over the same period. Age, growth, volume, number, and price of standing trees represent the data gathered. R. W. (Robert Walter) Graeber was a pioneer of North Carolina’s forestry extension service and a leader of the North Carolina Forestry Association for several decades. A graduate of North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (which later became North Carolina State University), Graeber was appointed farm forestry specialist (or state extension forester) in 1925, specializing in the thinning and management of timberlands. He served in this role until his retirement in 1950. As the state extension forester he led hundreds of forestry demonstrations across North Carolina for farmers and sawmill operators. Graeber instructed them in the harvesting, timber scaling, planting and marketing of trees and lumber products. For those that Graber could not teach in person, he wrote extension circulars and numerous newspaper articles that were circulated nationwide. Graeber also was instrumental in establishing the Department of Forestry at North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University) in 1929. Less

The collection also includes a number of playbills from Broadway shows and information on Marshall's travels. Roger Powell Marshall (1899-1987) was an educator, author, and North Carolina historian. The Roy Samuel Ingle Papers, 1940-1985, contains correspondence and personal memorabilia related to Ingle's life as a student at North Carolina State College (later University), his service in the United State Army Air Corps during World War II, and his experience as a geological engineer. Also in the collection are Ingle's student pilot logbooks, ration books from World War II, photographs, and memoirs. Roy Samuel Ingle was born in 1918 in Statesville, Iredell County, North Carolina. He served in the U.S. Air Corps in World War II and later worked as a geological engineer for the Tennessee Valley Authority. He was married to Lois Blanche Eller. Less

This collection contains two documents. The first is a three-page, handwritten letter, dated 2 September 1904, from Royal White to "Mama" and describing his first few weeks as a student at North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts. The second document is a handwritten transcription of the letter, made by Linda White, who is Royal White's granddaughter. Royall Edward White was originally from Aulander, North Carolina. He first attended North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (which later became North Carolina State University) in 1904. He studied civil engineering, and he graduated in 1908 with a bachelors degree in engineering. After graduation, he worked in his profession for 55 years. Less
