The collection contains the business and design records from James M. Webb's architectural firm, as well as his personal papers and some papers of his brother, John B. Webb, and his mother, Martha Webb. The major groupings of records are Project Files, Drawings, Maps, Professional Papers, Personal Papers, Photographs and Slides, Videos, Artifacts, John B. Webb, and Martha Webb. James Murray Webb was born in 1908 and died in 2000. In 1947, he joined the new City and Regional Planning School at the University of North Carolina (UNC) in Chapel Hill, where he served as a faculty member for thirty years. He and his brother, John Bruce Webb, maintained an architectural practice in Chapel Hill and designed a number of modernist houses and other buildings in the area. Less

The James Wyche Green Papers contain correspondence, research, reports, teaching materials, and other information relating to Green's five years of teaching in the Department of Rural Sociology at North Carolina State College. Included in the collection are research materials about farm life and population, two of Green's interests. Of special note in this collection are handwritten and typed student papers and book reports, as well as student autobiographies from 1949. James Wyche Green, born in 1915, taught classes in the Department of Rural Sociology at North Carolina State College from 1949 to 1954. He later worked for the United States Department of Agriculture and served as a consultant on agricultural development for the State Department. Green became a psychotherapist with interests in meditation in the 1970s, and published the book Integrative Meditation in 1994. Less

The Joab L. Thomas Papers include a copy of A Resolution of Commendation for Chancellor Joab L. Thomas, passed unanimously by the Student Senate (1981 April 15). There is also a transcription from a tape of Thomas' remarks to deans, directors, and department heads at the time of his resignation as chancellor and the announcement of his appointment as president of the University of Alabama (1981 March 25). The collection also includes items from Thomas's earlier career at the University of Alabama, particularly letters of congratulation upon his appointment as Vice President of Student Affairs in 1974. Joab Langston Thomas was the chancellor of North Carolina State University from 1976 to 1981, president of the University of Alabama from 1981 to 1988, professor at the University of Alabama from 1961 to 1975, and vice president for Student Affairs at the University of Alabama from 1974 to 1975. The John Fletcher Miller Papers contains materials related to Miller's involvement with athletics, intramural sports, and the Department of Physical Education at North Carolina State University. The collection contains a biographical essay, a certificate, correspondence, news and yearbook clippings, and photographs. The items date from 1924 to 1972. John Fletcher Miller was an athlete who played one season with the Saint Louis Browns (1912). He served as a coach at the University of Missouri, 1916-1921, and Albion College in Michigan, 1921-1924, before becoming the Head of the Department of Physical Education and Athletics at North Carolina State College in 1924. He served as the head of the Physical Education Department and the Director of Intramural Sports from 1924 to 1956. He was also the University's Director of Athletics and the President of the North Carolina Physical Education Association. The Miller Fields on the N.C. State campus are named for him. Less

Risley (born 1942) conducted research on the utilization and effectiveness of computer technology to teach physics. Physics education research showed that interactive, hands-on collaborative student environments produce signific ant student learning. Computers enhance this approach. The primary thrusts in this effort included evaluating educational software programs, deciding which tools to use, structuring substantive student activities, implementing student/teacher tasks and evaluating the impact. These activities were then carried out in the new SCALE-UP classroom at NC State University. External efforts included publishing peer-reviews physics educational software, as editor of Physics Academic Software in cooperation with the American Institute of Physics, the American Physical Society and the American Association of Physics Teachers. In addition, his group was involved with disseminating in formation about new materials in the physics journals, conducting teacher workshops, and collaborating at professional meetings. Professor Risley was the director of WebAssign, an online homework, quizzing, and testing assessment system that delivers, collects, and grades and records student's assignments. This wide-reaching facility incorporated textbook problems, many different answer types and classroom management tools. Coble in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, relates details about Patrick's trip to exhibitions in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, and Boston, Massachusetts, where he had been promoting North Carolina and encouraging immigration. The letter also reveals Patrick's plan to sell land in North Carolina to northern farmers. Both the original letter and a typed transcription are included. John Tyrant Patrick (1852-1918) was a journalist and resort developer from Wadesboro, North Carolina. Patrick attracted northerners to North Carolina by advertising inexpensive, fertile land in northern newspapers. In 1883, North Carolina Governor Thomas J. Jarvis appointed Patrick as the head of the Department of Immigration. During his tenure, he established the resort towns of Southern Pines and Pinebluff, North Carolina.
