The C. Frank Branan Architectural Drawings, 1924-1976, contains architectural drawings created or received by C. Frank Branan. Included are blueprints and tracings. Buildings represented include residences designed by Branan and located in Florida and North Carolina. The collection also contains plans for some buildings designed by other architects, such Crampton and Deitrick, for whom Branan once worked. While the materials span the time period 1924-1976, most documents date from 1949 to 1968. Also included are architectural drawings of C. Frank Branan's own residence in Raleigh. C. Frank (Cicero Franklin) Branan was born in 1922, and he grew up in Sanford, Florida. He graduated from the University of Florida in 1942. He practiced architecture in Daytona Beach, Florida, before relocating to Raleigh, North Carolina, in 1955 when he joined the architectural firm of William H. Deitrick (later Guy Crampton and Associates). Branan later became consulting architect for the State of North Carolina in the Office of Historic Preservation, retiring in 1990. The Charlotte Vestal Brown Wainwright Papers, 1767-1990, include correspondence, photographs, research notes, transcriptions, and blueprints. Material was gathered by Charlotte Vestal Brown Wainwright for her study of the practice of building in North Carolina between 1865 and 1945 and includes information on the administration of the grant project, photographs and manuscripts from the book written by Brown, as well as research and reference files used in the project. The Fieldcrest Mills records primarily contain building plans, site plans, elevations, sections, details, structural and electrical systems drawings and engineering plans for Fieldcrest Mills. These plans are related to a variety of textile mill warehouses located in Leaksville, Spray, and later Eden, North Carolina. Fieldcrest Mills was a Marshall Fields Company that produced an assortment of textiles including blankets, bedspreads, towels, bed sheets, bath accessories, bath rugs, rugs and furniture coverings; their warehouses were located in Draper, Leaksville and Spray, North Carolina. These three towns combined in 1967 to become Eden, North Carolina. The company changed in 1986 when Fieldcrest Mills merged with Cannon Mills of Kannapolis, North Carolina, becoming Fieldcrest Cannon, Inc. The George Matsumoto Papers includes blueprints, specifications, sketches, correspondence, publications, scrapbooks, photographs, contracts, financial statements, and other related architectural records that document the extensive commercial and residential work of George Matsumoto and Associates. The bulk of the collection is composed of architectural records, such as drawings and sketches, that signify Matsumoto's architectural influences and his approach to project development over time. Included are materials that cover the various types of projects he took on, such as residential, collegiate, commercial, and community centers. The architectural records cover a wide expanse of projects primarily in North Carolina and California, with others in Virginia, Missouri, New York, Florida, Kentucky, Arkansas, and Illinois. The architectural records, publications, honors and awards, and architectural model contained in the collection portray Matsumoto's career as an architect, businessman, and leader of modernist architecture in the 20th century. The materials range from 1930 to 2009, with the bulk from 1940 to 1979. A project index to the collection is available online. George Matsumoto (1922-2016) was a Japanese American architect and educator who is most known for his award-winning, modernist designs. In 1948, Matsumoto became a faculty member at the School (later College) of Design of North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University). During his tenure at the School of Design, Matsumoto won more than thirty awards for his residential work, and his achievements in design were widely published. In 1961, George Matsumoto went on to join the faculty at the College of Environmental Design at the University of California, Berkeley, and opened his own firm. He stopped teaching in 1967 but continued his architecture work until 1991. In contrast to his residential work, Matsumoto's post-teaching work is mostly comprised of community centers and collegiate designs. Less

The George Smart Papers, 1959-2004, document the professional activities of George McCollum Smart and his architectural firm. The collection is arranged into five series: drawings, project files, professional papers, electronic files, and photographic materials. Drawings include blueprints, sketches, and working drawings, representing a variety of projects undertaken by Smart and his firm. Project files contain correspondence, financial records, contracts and agreements, building and land surveys, design narratives and specifications, material samples, and notes relating to Smart’s design, construction, and renovation projects. Professional papers primarily include reference material relating to the design of educational and church facilities, construction materials, standards, and codes. Photographic materials include prints, negatives, and slides depicting the design, construction, and completion of various projects, including several churches and schools. George McCollum Smart (1931-2003) was an architect based in Raleigh, North Carolina from the early 1960s to 2002. Smart was born in South Carolina and attended high school in Virginia. He received a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from Randolph-Macon College in 1952 and a Bachelor of Architecture from North Carolina State College in 1959. Smart received his certification to practice architecture from the North Carolina Board of Architecture in 1961. He was a member of the American Institute of Architects. Prior to opening his own architectural firm, Smart was employed by Holloway and Reeves, Haskins and Rice, and Walter Burgess. From approximately 1964 on Smart presided over his own firm and had a series of partners including Charles Woodall, Max Isley, Troy Herring, and Mete Gurel. Smart designed and renovated many buildings including churches, schools, and post offices, primarily in North Carolina. His firm was also active in the areas of asbestos removal and fireproofing of public buildings. Smart retired from practice in 2002 and died in 2003. Less

The Gil Wheless Papers, 1960-2016, document the professional activities of Gilbert B. Wheless and the landscape architectural firm Environmental Design Associates PC (EDA). The collection is arranged into four series: drawings, photographic materials, project files, and electronic materials. Drawings include blueprints, sketches, and working drawings, mainly representing a variety of projects undertaken by Wheless and EDA, as well as architectural and engineering firms with which they worked. Photographic materials include prints, negatives, and slides depicting the design, construction, and completion of various projects, including residences and residential pools. Project files include EDA promotional materials, reference files, correspondence, sketches and project lists. Electronic files are primarily CDs containing photographs and documents relating to projects. This collection does not document the full extent of projects designed by EDA; it primarily represents just those projects on which Wheless worked. Gilbert B. Wheless, Jr. is a landscape architect who grew up in Durham, North Carolina. He graduated from Durham High School in 1960 and entered the School of Design (now College of Design) at North Carolina State University in 1961. In 1962, he began to focus on landscape architecture and studied under Lewis Clarke and Richard Moore. In 1970 Wheless, Donald Ferlow, and John Soluri became founding principals of Environmental Design Associates, PC. In the 2009, Wheless retired from the firm and returned to Durham. Less

The Harris and Pyne Records contain drawings, project files, photographs, and personal files documenting the professional activities of the Harris and Pyne architectural and engineering firm and its predecessor firms H. Raymond Weeks, Inc., Atwood and Weeks, and Atwood and Nash. The collection is arranged into four series: Drawings, Project Files, Photographic Materials, and Personal Files. Drawings include original pencil drawings, blueprints, and other reproductions. Project files includes various materials relating to projects, including a scrapbook, newsclippings, a financial recordbook, and supplemental documents to projects. Photographic materials includes professional black and white photographs of projects. Original documentation for many of the buildings and projects of these architecture firms is no longer in existence. Lastly, personal files include certificates, membership cards, biographical notes and obituary notes. Harris and Pyne was an architectural and engineering firm in Durham, North Carolina, from about 1958 to the 1990s, headed by engineer Wilton E. Harris and architect George C. Pyne, Jr. Its predecessor firms were T. C. Atwood (prior to 1920), Atwood & Nash, Architects and Engineers (early 1920s-early 1930s), Atwood & Weeks (1930s-1942), and H. Raymond Weeks, Inc. The collection contains the business and design records from James M. Webb's architectural firm, as well as his personal papers and some papers of his brother, John B. Webb, and his mother, Martha Webb. The major groupings of records are Project Files, Drawings, Maps, Professional Papers, Personal Papers, Photographs and Slides, Videos, Artifacts, John B. Webb, and Martha Webb. James Murray Webb was born in 1908 and died in 2000. In 1947, he joined the new City and Regional Planning School at the University of North Carolina (UNC) in Chapel Hill, where he served as a faculty member for thirty years. He and his brother, John Bruce Webb, maintained an architectural practice in Chapel Hill and designed a number of modernist houses and other buildings in the area. Less

The building was designed by Kenneth McCoy Scott. As of 2008, Anne Dahle is the owner of 3227 Birnamwood Road, Raleigh, North Carolina. The house was designed by Kenneth McCoy Scott for Paul Welles in 1955. Scott was a modernist architect who designed many other residences in the Raleigh and Durham area. Less

Thirty-two architectural drawings for Kingswood Elementary School in Cary, North Carolina. The earliest item is a plot plan headed "Proposed New Building for Cary Colored Elem. School, Randolph Benton, Supt. of Schools, Wake County Board of Education, Raleigh, N.C." Other plans dated August 1953 include a roof structural plan, a floor plan, front elevation, and details for the primary classroom building. Also included are a plot plan, 1958, for additions to the school; plans, 1959, for a gymtorium; and plans, 1959, for a classroom and cafeteria addition. Kingswood Elementary School was located at 519 Ferrell Street in Cary, North Carolina. It was built in 1953, with additions in 1958 and 1959, to be the elementary school for African American children in Cary. The architect was Frank B. Simpson of Raleigh, North Carolina, and the designer was C. Eugene Savage, also of Raleigh. Less

The Leslie N. Boney Architectural Papers document the work of Wilmington, North Carolina, architects Leslie N. Boney Sr., and Leslie N. Boney Jr. from projects done in conjunction with architect James F. Gause in the 1920s through projects of Boney Architects, Inc., in the 1980s. Educational institution plans make up a significant portion of the project files in this collection, representing schools from the elementary through university levels. The firm's architectural projects also include churches, banks, residences, offices, libraries, and retail establishments. The vast majority of these buildings are located in North Carolina, especially in the eastern part of the state, though a small number of South Carolina projects are included as well. These project files include correspondence, inspection reports, drawings, blueprints, project specifications, photographs, contracts, and bid data and forms. Personal papers of Leslie N. Boney Sr., make up a small part of this collection, and include copies of textiles, chemistry, and English exams dating from 1901 to 1903, belonging to Leslie N. Boney Sr., C. L. Creech, and O. Max Gardner. A copy of Boney Sr.'s account of the 1901 fire that destroyed NC State University's original Watauga Hall, as printed in the 1903 Agromeck, is also included. North Carolina native Leslie N. Boney Sr. (1880-1964) graduated from the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University) in 1903 with a degree in textile engineering. Boney joined Wilmington architect James F. Gause as a partner in practice in 1918, then took over the practice in 1922, upon Gause's retirement. Boney's eldest son, Leslie N. Boney Jr. (1920-2003), joined his father's practice after graduating from the College of Engineering at North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University) in 1940 with a Bachelor of Science in Architectural Engineering. Boney Jr. served in the Army Corps of Engineers during World War II, earning the rank of major, and returned to his family's architectural practice following the war. Boney Jr. was a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects, served as president of North Carolina's chapter of the American Institute of Architects, and was a recipient of North Carolina State University's prestigious Watauga Medal in 1996. Tillson Landscape Architecture Papers contains drawings, sketches, specifications, correspondence, notes, plant guides, and other materials that document the landscape design work of Tillson from the 1920s to the 1970s. The collection also contains an oral history interview of his son, David Tillson, in 2016. These materials encompass Tillson's work as a landscape architect, creating designs for small-scale residential locations, large-scale private subdivision, public parks, public housing projects, schools, churches, and hospitals. The collection represents Tillson's work throughout the southeastern United States, with the majority of the projects based in North Carolina's Piedmont Triad region. The earlier materials from 1906 to 1928 demonstrate Tillson's beginnings in landscape architecture while gaining knowledge and experience in the field. The bulk of the collection covers Tillson's career as a practicing landscape architect between 1928 and 1969. The collection ranges from 1906 to 2016. Reginald D. Tillson was a landscape architect in High Point, North Carolina, who designed significant improvements to the built environment of High Point and other communities of the Piedmont Triad area. His early career focused on residential design work for the wealthy and upper-middle-class residents of High Point, which at the time was a prosperous center of the textile and furniture industries. In the 1950s and following decades, as North Carolina's population grew and planning and development trends evolved, Tillson's work grew in scale and complexity. He designed dozens of subdivisions and grounds for schools, churches, and hospitals.
