The Edwin F. Harris Papers, 1957-2014, collection contains drawings, blueprints, maps, correspondence, photographs, and other documents related to the professional career of Edwin F. Harris. The collection reflects Harris’ work as an architect on a number of university campus planning projects and commercial building projects. During his more than two decades of employment with North Carolina State University, Harris contributed to the design and construction of many portions of the university, including Centennial Campus and the College of Veterinary Medicine. Harris also contributed to the design of several commercial buildings in North Carolina’s Research Triangle and buildings on other North Carolina university campuses. These projects include The Carolina Theatre and the North Carolina Biotechnology Center in Durham, the Worrell Professional Center at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, and the YMCA at Guilford College in Greensboro. Edwin F. Harris, nicknamed "Abie," was born January 7, 1934, in Elkin, North Carolina. He graduated from Elkin High School in 1952 and enrolled at the North Carolina State College, School of Design (later North Carolina State University, College of Design) to pursue a Bachelor of Arts in architecture. He graduated with honors in 1957. Harris was awarded the 45th Paris Prize in Architecture in 1958 which he used to travel to Paris, after a period of Army service. After returning from Paris, he became a lecturer at the NC State University School of Design and joined Leif Valand and Associates as an Architect-in-Training. In 1966 he was a co-founder and partner of Harris & Burns, Architects (1966-1968) and then a co-founder and principle for Envirotek, Inc. (1969-1974). In 1966, Harris also joined the campus planning department at NC State University. In 1970 he became Director of Facilities Planning and in 1980 University Architect. In addition to being an avid runner, Edwin F. Harris spent much of his spare time participating in design competitions and serving as a consultant on various projects. His honors include the grand prize in a planning competition for the University of Miami in 1986, his election as an American Institute of Architects Fellow in 1987, and the 9th Annual Frank B. Turner Award in 1991. Less

The Ellis B. Cowling Papers contain files from 1957 to 2013 that include reports, notes, writings, research data, memos, correspondence, and newspaper clippings documenting Ellis B. Cowling's career. There are correspondence, publications, media clippings from newspapers, websites and magazines, drafts and reports from the Ad Hoc Committee at North Carolina State University and photographs all related to the move of Cape Hatteras Lighthouse in 1999. There are also articles, correspondence, grant application materials, presentation materials, newsletters, newspaper clippings, and reports related to Cowling's animal waste research work, pertaining in particular to the Out-of-the-Box Thinking group. Additionally there are articles, background information, brochures, correspondence and news articles related to Cowling's involvement with the installation of Marye Anne Fox as Chancellor of North Carolina State University, the Watauga Seminar and the Faculty Senate. The largest series on the Southern Oxidants Study (SOS) contains annual meetings agendas, correspondence, presentation materials and reports related both directly to SOS and to its collaboration with other organizations. There is also extensive material about the Data Analysis Workshop conducted by SOS. In addition to these paper materials, there are also floppy disks, slides and photographs related to the Southern Oxidants Study (SOS). Finally, there are also audiovisual materials, primarily videotapes and cassette tapes. Most of the cassette tapes contain lectures Cowling gave over the course of a semester to the graduate-level PP [Plant Pathology] 650 course, although it is unclear what the course would have been titled since it no longer exists. Dr. Ellis B. Cowling is a University Distinguished Professor At-Large Emeritus of Forestry and Plant Pathology at North Carolina State University. Dr. Cowling specializes in biochemistry of wood decay, conservation of essential elements by forest trees, diseases of forest trees and deterioration of timber products, role of nitrogen in coevolution of forest trees and wood-destroying fungi, and integrated management of plant diseases. His other research interests include man-induced changes in the chemical climate and their effects on terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, and the role of scientists in public decision making. Dr. Cowling helped develop a nationwide system for monitoring acid deposition called the National Atmospheric Deposition Program (NADP). His appointment as the Chairman of the Ad Hoc Committee of Faculty at North Carolina State University contributed to the preservation and relocation of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse in North Carolina. This subgroup contains minutes of meetings of the Board of Trustees of the Endowment Funds of North Carolina State University, 1974-2010. Some minutes also contain correspondence, financial statements, bylaws, and other documents. The Board of Trustees of the Endowment Funds of North Carolina State University was established in 1974 by a North Carolina statute authorizing North Carolina State University, as an institution of the University of North Carolina System, to establish a permanent fund that would be administered by a five-member board to include the Chancellor and the Chair of NC State University's Board of Trustees. This collection of photographs contains black-and-white photographic prints depicting NC State baseball coaches Vic Sorrel and Sam Esposito, was well as the 1968 College World Series-winning team. These were owned by Frank Weedon and may have been displayed in his office on the NC State campus. Frank Weedon (1931-2013) had a long career in NC State Athletics from 1960 to 1996. He was the Sports Information Director until 1971 when he became Assistant Athletics Director. In retirement, he assumed the role of unofficial NC State athletics historian. Less

The George A. Gullette Papers contain documents from the beginning and end of the NC State career of this social studies professor. There is correspondence from 1947 regarding the college's interest in hiring Gullette to commence its social studies program (beginning with a contemporary civilization course modeled on one at Columbia University). Gullette's responses give insight into salary negotiations of the time period. A Lecture Given by the Late George A. Gullette To a Class in Social Studies is a printed version of a talk Gullette gave at North Carolina State University on January 13, 1969. The title Gullette gave this lecture is Prospects for the Future--The Next Twenty-Five Years. On March 19, 1970, the Friends of the Library distributed copies of the lecture at its annual banquet. In addition, portions of the lecture were read at Gullette's memorial service. George Albert Gullette (1909 - 1969) was the founder and head of the Social Studies Department at North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (after 1965, North Carolina State University) from 1947 to 1969. He received his B.A. in English literature from Harvard University in 1933, his M.A. from Vanderbilt University in 1934, and his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan in 1944. Before coming to NC State, Gullette taught at the University of Toledo (1936-1946) and Lincoln College (1946-1947). Less

This collection contains the sword, scabbard, and sheath of George Maslin Davis. These items date from circa 1900, and they were part of his cadet uniform. He used them during military exercises at North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts. George Maslin Davis (1880-1921) was a student at the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (which later became North Carolina State University), beginning in 1897 or 1898. He studied mechanical engineering, and he graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering degree in 1901. He later became a mechanical engineer in Roanoke, Virginia. Less

This collection contains a genealogy of the Herman Ward Taylor family, material on the Methodist Church related to world hunger, and Taylor's United States Army discharge papers. Taylor's correspondents include R. J. Reynolds Jr., Charles Reynolds, Gov. Robert W. Scott, Roy Park, and Ralph Scott. Also included are records from the North Carolina State University Alumni Association, Board of Trustees, and Board of Governors. Information from 1962 to 1965 documents N.C. State's name-changing process. Taylor's "Talks" articles describe campus life from the period 1918 to 1926. "Pop" Taylor received a B.S. in Agricultural Education (1926) and an M.S. in Agronomy (1927) from North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University), where a slight age advantage over his classmates earned him his nickname. He worked for the United States Department of Agriculture in North Carolina and in Washington, D.C., before returning to Raleigh as the Director of Alumni Affairs at North Carolina State College in 1942. He retired in 1965, and served Wake County as a representative in the North Carolina General Assembly from 1968 to 1970. He was awarded the Watauga Medal in 1978. Less

This collection contains the diploma of Hugh Williams Primrose for the degree of Bachelor of Science in Applied Sciences from the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts, 1897. Hugh Williams Primrose was one of six sons born to William Stuart Primrose and Ella Williams Primrose. He was born on January 21, 1878 and died January 27, 1904. The Jackie Gonzalez Papers contains materials from Jackie Gonzalez's service in NC State University's Student Government as student body president. Included are campaign and other buttons, photographs of Gonzalez's swearing-in ceremony and graduation, a campaign T-shirt, Gonzalez's State of Student Government address, and other documents. Jackie Gonzalez was the first Latinx student body president at NC State University. She served in the position during the 2017 to 2018 year. Previous positions she held within Student Government included chair of the University Relations Committee and vice chair of the Government Relations and Oversight Committee. She has been donor development chair for the Krispy Kreme Challenge, chair of the Student Media Board of Directors, CHASS ambassador, and at-large member of the Student Center Board of Directors. The Jim Davis Photographs contain photographs, slides, and negatives of the NC State University campus, student life and activities, athletics, and Chancellor John Caldwell, among other topics. Selected images were used in the Agromeck yearbooks of 1972, 1973, and 1974. Most items were photographed by Jim Davis (editor of the 1975 Agromeck), but some were taken by Michael O'Brien and Jim Holcombe, also on the Agromeck staff. Less

The John Brake Papers include research and subject files, Broiler Breeder Research Workshop Workbooks, flash drives, electronic files transferred via external hard drive, and class materials both from Dr. Brake's teaching and from his years as an undergraduate at NC State University. Topics include improving chicken health, breeding, and egg quality. Materials range in date from 1950 to 2019, with the bulk of the materials being from the 1970s-2000s. The materials from the 1950s and 1960s are research papers and publications that Dr. Brake kept for reference. This collection also contains information on NC State University Chicken Education Units and other poultry science facilities. John Thomas Brake (1952-2018) was a member of the faculty of NC State University, beginning as an assistant professor of Poultry Science in 1981. In 2001, he was named William Neal Reynolds Distinguished Professor in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. He also served as Director of Graduate and Certificate Programs for the Prestage Department of Poultry Science from 2003 to 2017. Less

The John David Smith Papers document Dr. Smith's involvement in the establishment of the Public History degree program at NC State University. Included in this collection are his correspondence, notes, and minutes related to the classes he taught, conferences he attended, and committees of which he was a member. In addition to these materials, this collection includes newsletters, clippings, and articles he retained that were related to his work at NC State University and the background research he did while developing the Public History degree program. John David Smith has taught at Indiana University-Purdue University, the University of South Carolina, Southeast Missouri State University, and NC State University before accepting a position at UNC Charlotte. Prior to teaching, he graduated with both a Master's and Ph.D. from the University of Kentucky in 1973 and 1977 respectively. By the end of his NC State University career, which began in 1982, he rose through the ranks of the history department to graduate alumni distinguished professor of history and eventual director of the Master's in Public History program, specializing in the Civil War and the history of race relations in the United States. This collection is comprised of one sepia-tone photograph of John Harrelson speaking on the steps of the Bell Tower, ca. 1940. Several unidentified men are also present, some in military uniform. John Harrelson was chancellor of North Carolina State College (now University) from 1931 to 1953. The Memorial Bell Tower, to honor NC State students and alumni killed in World War I, was begun in 1921, but it wasn't completed until several years later and was dedicated finally in 1949. Less

The Joseph Alfred Miller Papers contain items from Miller's student days (1900-1904) at the college that eventually became NC State University. Included are the jacket and caps of his cadet uniform; photographs showing student life, athletics, and campus buildings; student publications; and one of his engineering textbooks. A few of the photos show Miller's future wife Ella Duckett and his college roommate William Joel Patton. Some of the student publications and the textbook contain his marginalia (the textbook contains a note about Professor Carl Riddick). The collection also contains some college publications from the 1930s when other Miller family members attended NC State, and this includes athletics programs. Joseph Alfred Miller (1883-1949) of Brevard, North Carolina, graduated from North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (abbreviated A & M and later renamed North Carolina State University) in 1904. He was later a camp director and assistant county supervisor for the Farmers Home Administration. Less

The Kanton T. Reynolds Papers contain name tags and business cards from student government, a Technician newspaper, photographs from Reynolds' time as student government Chief Justice, and student government projects and papers. Subjects include preventing destructive student celebrations, NC State University basketball, and student government goals. Also included in this collection are a few items from Tasha Youngblood, Student Body Treasurer. Materials range from 1992 to 1995 with several undated items. Kanton T. Reynolds graduated from North Carolina State University in 1995 with a B.S. in Industrial Engineering. As a student, he ran unopposed and won the position of Chief Justice for student government in the 1994 election. He was a member of the National Society of Black Engineers and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. Reynolds went on to earn a Masters of Industrial Engineering and Business Administration in 1997 and 2005. He then received his Ph.D. from North Carolina A&T University in 2014. After spending twenty years in the corporate realm, Dr. Reynolds came back to NC State University as the Director of Undergraduate Programs for the Edward P. Fitts Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering in 2017. Less

The Kenneth O. Beatty Papers contain both the professional and personal papers of the North Carolina State University chemical engineering professor. Included are professional and personal correspondence; research proposals; notes, reports, drafts of articles, speeches, and conference papers; university committee files; photographs and newspaper clippings; a scrapbook and several historical accounts of the North Carolina State University Department of Chemical Engineering; poetry; and other documents. Kenneth Orion Beatty was a professor of chemical engineering, 1946-1978, at North Carolina State University. His research interests included heat and mass transfer field, and in the 1960s and 1970s, he was a major participant in the International Heat Transfer Conferences. He also worked on languages for the blind and braille accessibility and functionality. After retirement, he was known as an expert witness in slip-and-fall and arson cases. Less

Contained in this collection are eight black-and-white photographs showing troops and military training (most likely the 59th College Training Detachment) on the campus of North Carolina State College (now North Carolina State University) in 1944. These photographs were originally in the possession of Kenneth W. Pierce, and at least two photos show him. During World War II, North Carolina State College (now North Carolina State University) hosted a number of U.S. military training units. Included in these were the U.S. Army Air Force 59th College Training Detachment, the U.S. Army Specialized Training Program, and the U.S. Navy Diesel Program. Kenneth W. Pierce (originally from East Walpole, Mass.) was stationed here in 1944 for training, probably in the 59th College Training Detachment. Less

The Kofi Boone Papers contains architectural drawings, studies, correspondence, files, and media clippings for projects that span Boone's student and professional careers. Boone's documented projects include: master plans completed during graduate school at the University of Michigan; urban design guidelines, planning analyses and public park designs completed at the multidisciplinary firm JJR Inc.; and participatory designs and place-based storytelling efforts completed out of the NC State Department of Landscape Architecture. Most graduate school and JJR projects are located in the Detroit area, and most NC State projects are located in North Carolina. The collection also includes web content: The Cultural Landscape Foundation blog, The Landscape Architecture Podcast, and a website featuring Kofi Boone's "Black Landscapes Matter" article. Kofi Boone is an African American landscape architect and a professor in the NC State University Department of Landscape Architecture within the College of Design. Boone joined the Department of Landscape Architecture faculty in 2004. Through scholarship, teaching and extension service, Boone works in the landscape context of environmental justice and explores the use of new media as a means of increasing community input in design and planning processes.
