The William Joseph Peele Papers, 1888-1923, contain items relating to Peele's tenure on the Board of Trustees at North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University) between 1899 and 1901. The majority of material details administrative topics discussed and changes made during that period. A small number of personal materials are also included. William Joseph Peele (1855-1919) was a lawyer, an author, and an active participant in organizing state history agencies. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill in 1879. The Walter L. Smith Papers, 1934-1986, contain speeches, minutes, correspondence, programs, a scrapbook, a diary, memos, lists, newsclippings, photographs, and memorabilia from Smith's military service in World War II and his involvement with NC State University. The scrapbook is titled "The Success Story of A. E. Finley." Originally from Raleigh, North Carolina, Walter Little Smith (1914-2007) graduated from North Carolina State College in July 1935 with a B.S. in mechanical engineering (aeronautical option). During World War II, Smith served in the U.S. Army. He became a lieutenant colonel and was Chief of the Supply Division, Engineering Section, Advance Section Communications Zone (ADSEC). He helped set up the Engineering Section in France beginning on 9 June 1944 as part of the D-Day invasion of Normandy. Smith served several years on the building committee for what was then North Carolina State College. When the Board of Governors for the UNC System was formed in 1971, individual Boards of Trustees were formed for each campus as well. Smith was appointed to the NC State University Board of Trustees, and served on the board from 1972 to 1981. NC State University awarded Smith the Watauga Medal in 1983 for his service to the school. The Watauga Club Records contain historical and financial records, correspondence, meeting minutes, membership information, publications, and photographs dating from 1884 to 2020. The collection includes information about the founding in 1884 and the Centennial anniversary in 1984 but focuses primarily on publications about the club and its members. The Watauga Club was founded in 1884 to strengthen North Carolina agriculture, industry, education, health, statesmanship, art, literature, and moral and spiritual values. The club was instrumental in the founding of the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University) and emphasized the need for instruction in mechanic arts. Collection contains publications, correspondence, reports, brochures, promotional literature, photographs and slides, and research announcements pertaining to issues concerning ground water, its quality, contamination, and related problems. Records include a proposal to form the Institute (1963). The Water Resources Research Institute identifies and supports research needed to help solve water quality and water resources problems in North Carolina and the region. It also provides information on water-related issues through its publications, conferences, workshops, seminars and the WRRI-News electronic list. This collection contains 1968 campaign ad and newsclippings from Wes McClure’s campaign for North Carolina State University Student Body President. Wesley A. (Wes) McClure (1946- ) graduated with a Bachelor of Architecture degree from North Carolina State University in 1969. While attending the university, he served as student body president, 1967-1969. After graduation he practiced architecture mostly in North Carolina, and he was a principal in the firm McClure Hopkins Architects. He is a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects. This collection contains approximately twenty photographs and a laboratory workbook of W. E. Wilson for an electrical engineering class. The photographs (all black-and-white) include portraits of H. K. Plott and W. E. Wilson, both NC State students. There are several snapshots of college age men and women, probably fellow students at NC State as well as students other nearby colleges. There are a couple photographs of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity house. None of the materials are dated, but they appear to have been created during the 1920s. Westray (or Westry) Edwin Wilson, also known at "W.E.," was a student at North Carolina State College (later University). He was originally from Asheville, North Carolina. He received a BS in electrical engineering from NC State in 1927. After graduating from college, Wilson served in the U.S. Army, attaining the rank of colonel. He retired to Clearwater, Florida, and passed away in the 1980s or early 1990s. Less

The papers in this collection pertain to William Mitchell Cates's undergraduate career at North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University). A variety of coursework is represented, including a report on the operation of the Panama Canal, graded business letters, handouts on the economics of electric companies and original problem sets, as well as Cates's work on these problems in the form of computations, charts, graphs, notes, and exams. This collection also contains materials relating to Cates’s registration and housing, university publications, and other engineering-related publications. All the materials are handwritten, printed, mimeographs, or blue Photostat copies, and are dated 1927 to 1936. The bulk of the collection dates from 1929 to 1932. A native of Millboro, North Carolina, William Mitchell Cates attended the North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University) from 1928 to 1932. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering in June 1932. Less
