State, 1968-1975. Lloyd Robert Zumwalt (1914-1998) was a nuclear chemist from Richmond, California, who worked for the Manhattan Project during World War II. After working for General Atomic in the 1960s, he was a professor of nuclear engineering at North Carolina State University from 1967 to 1980.
